Scottsboro, Alabama was a town in Lowndes County, Alabama, United States. It is now part of the Huntsville/Decatur metropolitan area. The population was 1,813 at the 2010 census. The town started as a post office on October 5, 1892, and grew rapidly due to its location near the then-new Scottsboro Railroad station. On July 4th, 1895, Scottsboro's first school opened its doors to children of all races. By 1902, the town had a Masonic Lodge and a Baptist Church. In 1916, Scottsborough's first store opened and it quickly became one of Lowndes County's most popular businesses. On December 12th of that year, eighteen young men from nearby Cullman were found hanged from trees outside the small town limits. The incident soon internationally became known as "the Scottsboro Boys" case after their hometown of Scottsboro (now Decatur) named itself in their memory. As an result of public outcry and media attention surrounding the case (and subsequent prosecutions),Alabama Governor George Wallace declared a state of emergency in Lowndes County on January 3rd and called for federal troops to be brought in to quell any civil unrest that may have arisen from the tragedy. This led to further growth for the small community with new stores opening up and more people moving into it from other parts of Lowndes County during what would become known as "the Great Migration". In 1955-1956 when Alabama experienced some major social changes through Montgomery's passage of Civil Rights legislation - including Jim Crow laws - many African American residents decided to move away from Birmingham because they felt safe there but could not ignore or forget what happened at Scottsboro which still haunTS them today 37 years later
Scottsboro was a station on the Alabama Railroad. The original Scottsboro depot was built in 1892, and served as the center of operations for the railway until it merged with the Louisville and Nashville Railroad in 1923.
