Gun protection history in Scottsboro, Alabama began with the establishment of a customs post at Scottsboro in 1819. The post was located on the Chattahoochee River, which became an important trade route for goods and people between Georgia and Alabama. The first guns to be used in defense of Scottsboro were pistols purchased by Captain John Sevier from England. The guns were used to protect the post during military exercises. In 1838, Major General Nathan Bedford Forrest ordered the gunning down of two steamboats that had run aground on the river near Scottsboro. The boats had been carrying goods bound for Mobile, Alabama. The shooting caused several injuries and one death. In 1861, Confederate forces occupied Scottsboro and began to arm its citizens for war. During the months leading up to Battle of Gettysburg, many men from around Scottsboro volunteered their services as soldiers or militia. One man who played a significant role in this effort was James Fenton Henderson Jr., owner of a grocery store at nearby Decatur Street and Main Avenue known as Henderson’s Grocery House. Henderson offered his storehouse as a command center for Confederate troops during the battle and also collected food for them while they fought off Union forces stationed nearby. After Battle of Gettysburg, Union troops pillaged through both Scottstown and neighboring towns in search of weapons and supplies being stockpiled by Confederate forces. Many residents who could not flee fear were captured or killed when Union forces invaded town square after retreating from Gettysburg Bridgehead on July 2, 1865.
