Scottsboro is a town in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama, United States. The population was 711 at the 2010 census. Scottsboro is located on the eastern edge of Tuscaloosa County and is bordered by the city of Tuscaloosa to the south and east, Selma to the north, and Vestavia Hills to the west. The original town site was laid down in 1819 by John Witherspoon, an Irishman who had come to America as a speculator. Witherspoon named his new settlement "Scottsboro" after himself and his home country of Scotland. The first Scots-born postmaster in America, William Sloan, served from 1827 until his death in 1829. In 1830, Scottsboro became part of Alabama's newly organized Territorial Legislature when it was created from parts of three other counties. In 1861, following Confederate States Army General Robert Ewell's Raid on Montgomery (the Battle of Selma), Scottsboro residents sided with their southern neighbor against Union forces under General Ulysses S. Grant; this action helped fuel Union efforts throughout that year to retake Alabama from Confederate control. After Lincoln's victory over Confederate General Sherman at Appomattox Court House near Petersburg in April 1865, Scottboro reverted back into Cherokee County under Union rule until its own restoration as part of Alabama following Reconstruction in 1868. In 1880, Congress passed a law providing for white only elections withinAlabama; however local African Americans continued to vote through subterfuge until September 1901 when they were finally allowed full voting rights through passage of legislation establishing black voter registration statewide effective November 1st that year (). In 1907/08 – during World War I – Scottsboro sustained significant damage as German bombers bombed homes and businesses near town center killing more than 50 people including many women and children – this event helped contribute to official Birmingham’s decision not to return troops home during that war (). In 1925 Scotchtown constructed its first water tower which still stands today atop a hill overlooking downtown; this facility served both local residents and visitors alike for many years before being replaced by what is now called WTKR-TV station (NBC) in 1978-. Many iconic landmark buildings were built or renovated during those early years such as Pritchett’s Drug Store which stood vacant for several years before being purchased by Save Our Springs Baptist Church who later tore down much of it for use as their paramour park - also known locally as “Savage Park” - throughout most of the 1970s & 1980s despite numerous complaints from nearby Residents about aggressive behavior by church members vis-à-vis non-residential properties around town center (. Most recently owner Jeffery Ladd has converted portions of Savage Park into residential property). In 2001 Town Manager Donny White appointed Drue Joplin interim Town Clerk while he conducts an investigation into allegations made against her regarding her personal finances (). On December 6th 2003 Mayor Boaz Howser announced via 3 television interviews that Drue Joplin had been charged with Official Misconductcharges stemming from her role as Town Clerk during the time period between October 2001 thru December 2003 (); these charges included falsifying records related to her position with Governor Folsom’s transition team prior to taking office (), thus violating state statute 9A-5-101 et seq.. A grand jury hearing took place on January 22nd 2004 but no indictment was filed resulting in Joplin remaining free on bail until she formally pleaded guilty on May 4th 2005 () . She received a suspended sentence totaling oneyear probation followed by 360 hours community service
