The loss of mills during World War II led to economic decline for Scottsboro; however, some new businesses have arisen since then including agribusiness and construction companies that have helped revive the economy. Today's mainstay has been retail services with several larger stores dottingthe center of downtown which are anchored by two large Wal-Marts (one on each side of MainStreet). In recent years there has been talk of redeveloping or demolishing much of downtown Scottsboro due to its aging infrastructure and limited potential for growth beyond its core shopping district while stillserving as an important cultural center within this heavily populated region
