The first public school opened in 1909; it served grades one through twelve until 1957 when it closed due to budget cuts. In 1925, a movie theater was built and named after then-Senator John F Kennedy (1917-1963). After his assassination in 1963, many people from Scottsboro attribute their sadness to his death rather than Watergate In 1967, an act was passed that changed the zoning for most townships in Alabama from agricultural to housing development; this causedScottsboro's growth slow down again because there wasn't enough land available for more homes. Finally, plans were made to build a shopping mall in Scottsboro but never came about due to opposition from nearby towns such as Birmingham In 2002, efforts started by local citizens to get money brought back into Scottsboro from outside sources helped spur redevelopment which has resulted in more jobs for locals and more investment downtown As of the 2010 census there are 1 531 people living within Scottsboro limits
