Gun magazines have been around for centuries and their history in Scottsboro is reflective of that. The first gun magazine in Scottsboro was established by Andrew Jackson in 1836. It was called the "Jackson Rifle Magazine." The first rifle used in a shooting match at the state fairgrounds was an 1836 French-made Model 653 rifle. The Gunsmoke Pistol and Rifle Club, founded in 1850, conducted its business from a building on School Street. In 1865, the club moved to a new location on State Street. The club closed its doors in 1925 and its members were unable to continue operations because of financial difficulties. In 1932, the town of Scottsboro formed a committee to investigate problems with firearms and ammunition storage facilities. Their report recommended that all gun stores be required to keep records of each purchase and sale of firearms and ammunition within their store inventory, as well as produce monthly reports listing any purchases greater than $5 (at that time, this was a very low price point). This recommendation was enacted as part of the 1934 National Firearms Act Amendments which created background check requirements for firearm purchasers and sellers alike. 1) Firearm Storage Facilities - After investigating problems with several local gun stores, it was determined that all but one were not meeting compliance with regulations set forth by the government. A committee was formed to find a solution to this problem; however due to lack of resources they were unable to accomplish anything significant until 1978 when they formally petitioned Congress for passage of the Brady Bill (named after then-Senator Tom Brady). 2) Background Check Requirements - As mentioned before, under new federal law all firearm buyers had to go through extensive background checks which included checking against national databases such as those maintained by FBI or National Criminal Information Center (NCIC). This requirement applied even if someone did not own any weapons or Ammunition! 3) Records Management - One important function performed by most gun stores during this time period was keeping track of each individual's sales/purchases totaling over $5 over an extended period of time! This information would have been valuable in determining whether or not someone had broken any laws pertaining to firearms possession or sale

The town of Scottsboro, Alabama was the site of a tragic incident in the early 1800s. On December 15, 1879, nine white boys from nearby Chattanooga were arrested for participating in a schoolboy race riot that had occurred earlier in the day. The boys were charged with five counts of racism and four counts of draft evasion. The trial was held before Circuit Court Judge John Ewing and began on January 12, 1880. The prosecution rested its case on December 15th but produced no evidence to support its charge against the nine defendants. On January 20th, Circuit Court Judge Ewing found all but one of the defendants guilty and sentenced them to death without mercy. After hearing argument from both sides, he pronounced sentence onJanuary 26th and handed down the death sentences to eight defendants: James Houston (1871-1934), George Hardin (1872-1954), John Liggins (1876-1965), William Whitehead (1878-1963), Jesse Owens (1912-2008), Owen Thomas (1900-1979) This event has come to be known as "the Scottsboro Boys" because only seven of those executed actually died in prison; three committed suicide while awaiting execution, two were pardoned by President Franklin D. Roosevelt after World War II, and one died natural causes within months of his release from prison after serving time for assault with a deadly weapon. In total, twenty six people were convicted and sent to die at Fort Warren State Penitentiary in Worcester County, Massachusetts--eleven men killed by firing squad and thirteen hanged--but only three still remain alive today: Houston is currently living in exile in Italy; Liggins is buried at Arlington National Cemetery; Whitehead is incarcerated at Mountaintop Correctional Facility near Jacksonville, Florida; Owens is deceased at age ninety-six years old.
