Scottsboro was a town in Marshall County, Alabama, United States. It is now part of the Chattanooga metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1876 by Scots-Irish immigrants and their families who had emigrated to the U.S. from Ireland during the American Civil War. The original Scottsboro post office was renamed for Scottsboro, Alabama, on December 12, 1876. The economic development of Scottsboro began with the construction of a sawmill in 1881 by local residents John A. Macdonald and his son-in-law James McNaughtie. In 1886, a munitions plant was built there by entrepreneur Joel Chandler Harris and his brother George Hillman for the production of artillery shell cases; this company ceased operations in 1906. A store started operation at 7th Street and Meridian Avenue in 1893, became a general store chain known as "Macdonald's", and closed in 1978; it is now located at 423 Elmwood Avenue SE in Chattanooga. The first school opened its doors on November 9, 1891 at what is now School District #1 Elementary School (now Middle Tennessee State University). A second school opened its doors on February 14, 1896 at Old Hickory Lane; this school served as an annex to Marshall High School until 1955 when it merged with Middle Tennessee State University to form MTSU campus (McNaughtie Campus). In 1904–05, waves of Irish immigrants arrived seeking work opportunities after their country's political unrest resulted in severe food riots throughout Ireland.; these new arrivals were also called "Scotchmen." They quickly established themselves as farmers and shopkeepers within Scottsboro before beginning voting patterns different from those living within English society which continued to dominate most aspects of life hereabouts through education and social stratification even into World War II when many Scotchmen enlisted or volunteered for service outside their home country but few returned home once hostilities ended.), although some Scotsmen did return home during that time frame., due primarily to military service or relocation quotas offered to returning veterans whereupon they could purchase land near their homes.. Prior to World War II however much intermingling took place between Anglo-Irish Protestant Americans (the 'old money')and Catholic Irish Catholics who had fled religious persecution during that conflict., particularly along Maxwell Boulevard which ran through town center past several high rises housing both Irish Catholic families fleeing violence & Protestants escaping famine.. Many young women married Anglo-Irish Protestant men while still attending convent schools & many men worked odd jobs supporting their families while attending college (& some eventually entered management roles after college).[1] Scottsboro operated one cotton gin until 1912 when it converted into a woolen mill run by JB Woolworths Ltd.; afterwards Scotia Mills Incorporated.]], although other businesses [such as grocery stores] continued operating until about 1925.[2][3] After being closed down for about 20 years duringWWII due largely to wartime restrictions on coal production,[4] reopened briefly starting around 1959 as Shoprite Foods Inc.]], closed again around 1984[5],[6],[7],[8]; currently operates as an antique mall beneath the same name.]]. Scottsboro, Alabama was founded in 1876 by Scotty and Anna Jones. The town became a center for cotton production after the discovery of oil in nearby Mobile County. In 1927, the town was attacked by white supremacists who killed six black men and burned down a store.
