Saraland, Alabama is a small town located in Marshall County, Alabama. The population was 553 at the 2010 census. The community is named after John Saraland, a Union soldier who fought in the American Civil War. Saraland was established in 1881 and has been populated for over 120 years. The town is home to a Baptist church and a post office which opened in 1886. The first settler in Saraland was John Gentry who arrived from Tennessee in 1881. Gentry built a cabin on the banks of the Mobile River. He married Anna Hargrave and their children founded the village of Gentryville on what is now State Highway 231 south of town. In 1887, two more settlers, James Aiken and Sarah Aiken, arrived with their three children to help build some homes and start trading with local Native Americans for goods such as corn and cattle. By 1899, there were ten people living in Saraland with eighty-four acres (32 hectares) of land surrounding it riverside. In 1901, the town's first school opened under sponsorship by Methodist Reverend Jnoah Henderson Jr.. After serving as angrade school until 1922 when Lighthouse School became operational due to financial difficulties, Reverend Henderson donated his property along State Highway 231 to establish a public schools system that would serve Saraland for educational purposes starting from 1923 onward thereby beginning its long history as one of Alabama's most storied small towns!
