Saraland, Alabama is a small town in Marshall County, Alabama. The population was 1,835 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Marshall County. The name Saraland comes from the Choctaw word "saran" meaning "a place where woodchucks live." The first white settlers in Saraland were David and John White. In 1821, they erected a cabin on the present site of Saraland and started to grow corn, beans, and rice. In 1824, they built a school for their children and began selling goods to settlers in surrounding counties. One of David White's sons, James White (1827-1901), became an early postmaster in Saraland and helped start several businesses there including asawmill, bakery, grocery store, insurance company and state bank. In 1868 when Mobile became the capital of Alabama under Reconstruction after the American Civil War ended, James White decided to move his family from Meridianville to Montgomery because he felt that Montgomery would be more welcoming to black people as it had been during Reconstruction before discrimination against blacks began en masse across all levels of government statewide. He purchased 4 acres (1 km2) of land near what is now downtown Saraland on September 2nd 1870 from John Akerly for $3 per acre ($ today). construction began on what would become known as theWhite House Place development which included three stories of brick architecture with Clark's Addition being added later by James Wightman (1882-1964) who also designed many other famous buildings in downtown Montgomery including Hoover Dam and Tuskegee University Main Building which are still used as office space today.
