Saraland is a small town in Jefferson County, Alabama. It was founded in 1871 by the merger of two adjacent settlements, Saraland and Rockville. The communities had been located on opposite banks of the Mobile River. When Saraland merged with Rockville, it became one of only a handful of towns in Alabama that were not named after Native Americans. The first school in Saraland was opened in 1872 by Reverend A.P. Hilliard and his students from Lebanon Presbyterian Church. The school closed in 1875 because of lack of funding. In 1876, George Withers established a grocery store and post office at the edge of town to serve the residents. By 1880, Withers had built three stores and two churches in Saraland- one for the Methodist Episcopal Church and one for the Baptist Association- giving it an overall population of 20 people. By 1914, Saraland had legalized alcohol sales so that citizens could enjoy their product without fear of being prosecuted by the local law enforcement officials. The prohibitionist movement emerged inAlabama during this time as a way to protest against state meddling into matters that were considered purely personal business between individual citizens In 1916, Captain James Fenton became headmaster at Middle Tennessee Female Seminary School which served as both primary education for girls and an economic development center for Saraland until its closure in 1951 when community resources were better developed within Middle Tennessee Male Seminary School across town (now known as East High School). In 1951, saraland's only hospital opened its doors with medical attention limited to patients who could afford expensively treated injuries or those who needed surgery beyond what basic care could provide Since then, many businesses have cropped up around saralAND including restaurants such as Joe's Crab Shack (opened 1984), Subway (opened 1988), Chick-fil-A (opened 1997) and Hardee's (opened 2001). In 2006, sarALAND celebrated its centennial year with festivities including an open house sponsored by Coca ColaCola Company Headquarters which included tours of various company facilities throughout downtown SARALAND .
