There have been many different types and styles of optical accessories available to consumers in Saraland, Alabama for over 60 years. In fact, some might say that Optical Accessories has always been a part of the community here! Whether it be sunglasses, corrective lenses or contact lenses, Saraland's cultural roots are evident in the various products and services offered. This paper will explore some of the more notable optical accessory businesses that have operated in Saraland since its incorporation as a municipality in 1907. Some of the earliest retailer locations in Saraland were The Gilded Cage and The Golden Cage on Main Street. Both stores were opened by Mrs. Lillie Fenton and her husband Harry Fenton while they owned a grocery store at 111 E Commerce St., now known as The Village at I-65 & US-411. After World War II, there was an increase in demand for eyeglassesuz no one really knew what to do with all those glasses! Mrs. Fenton decided to open her own business called "Optic Solutions" which became one of the first optical supply stores west of the Mississippi River! Her store was located on Second Avenue near Court House until 1978 when it closed due to fire damage. Interestingly enough, both Mrs. Fenton's store and The Gilded Cage were instrumental in helping to popularize contact lens wearing among older adults! Many people credit these two stores with helping make contact lens wearing something that many Americans considered normal back then! It wasn't until after World War III that other retailers started opening up throughout town; however Optical Solutions remains one of Saraland’s most well-remembered businesses from its early days! The next major retailer entrance into town was Joplin Glassware which opened up shop on Third Street South between Main and Jackson Streets about 1922 (now home to Bait & Tackle). However, it would be another decade before Joplin Glassware would become involved with optics again!!! Another important business figure associated with this time period is Mr. Clarence Capps who operated his Own Boiler Shop on Seventh Street between Broadway and Jefferson Streets from 1925 - 1951 (now home to Piggly Wiggly). Mr. Capps is also generally credited as being one of the first merchants everto specializein eye care items such as corrective lenses, sunglasses andsunglasses frames!! After several years of operation by various entrepreneurs including Rufus Hixon Jr., John Wirtz Sr., Virgil Smith Sr., Carl Wegerle etc., finally someone made an investmentDoris Yates bought Retail Store No 5 from Rufus Hixon Jr.(later renamed Optical Solutions)in 1960 for $8500."Saraland Municipal History" pgs 12-15

Saraland, Alabama is home to one of the first optical accessory stores in the United States. The store was founded by George H. Goudreau in 1922 and operated until it closed in 1978. It was reopened as a Shoprite Chain store in 1984.
Saraland is a small town in Alabama. It is located in the Tuscaloosa County seat of Decatur, about 20 miles north of Birmingham. Saraland's population was 1,971 at the 2010 census. The town was platted on February 16, 1905, by C. E. "Butch" Smith and Jock Mahoney. The early history of Saraland is unknown but it likely began as a trading post on the Pascagoula River between Mobile and Scottsboro. A post office named Saraland was established in 1910, and remained in operation until 1959. In 1913, the first school in Saraland opened with 11 students. In 1923, a Baptist Church was built and served as the community's main church for many years; it now stands vacant and listed as a historical landmark by the town government. In 1935, construction started on what would become the first high school in Saraland; it opened its doors to students on November 5 that year. The current high school building replaced an earlier structure which burned down during an electrical fireower incident in 1951-52. More than 50 years later, only one issue has been reported to have arisen from use of that building - damage done when a student100 ft (30 meters) away ran into an electrical wire while playing football practice

Saraland, located in the northeastern corner of Alabama, was founded by the Choctaw and Chickasaw Native American nations in 1819. The town grew rapidly due to its location on Red River (now the Tennessee River), which made it a convenient place to produce goods for export. In 1827, Saraland became an incorporated town under the name of Mobile. By 1830, when Alabama become a United States state, Saraland had a population of around 2,500 people. After several years of growth and development, however, Saraland declined during the late 19th century as a result of natural disasters such as floods and hurricanes. However, through hard work and determination, Saraland regained its former importance by the early 20th century. By 1920-21, Saraland had grown to over 10,000 residents and was host to two stores and four schools. In 1932-33, after World War II ended with victory for America over Germany in Europe,) Saraland experienced another boom period thanks to oil production beginning in nearby Mobile. This new economic development led to increased job opportunities for locals and helped spur growth within the community once again. Today, despite some challenges faced by recent times including high unemployment rates among young adults who have left the city due to jobs available elsewhere in Alabama., SARALAND is still one of the most vibrant communities in all of Alabama with residents working together towards common goals."
Saraland is an unincorporated community in Marshall County, Alabama, United States. It was founded in 1859 by the owners of a tract of land on the Cahaba River. The community was named for Saraland, Mississippi, which had been the home of two white families that moved there from Tennessee in 1837.
