Saraland, Alabama is a small town in the state of Alabama. The population was 5,471 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Birmingham metropolitan area. Saraland is located about 20 miles (32 kilometers) east of downtown Birmingham and about 25 miles (40 kilometers) southwest of Huntsville. Saraland was founded on December 1, 1871 by John Atherton and his family. It became a town on January 1, 1872 when it consolidated with nearby Sheffield. The name "Saraland" comes from the Choctaw word sarl-a-li-dun meaning "place where cotton is harvested." The first post office in Saraland was established on October 15, 1876. The first store was built in 1895. By 1907, there were six businesses in Saraland: a grocery store, three restaurants, two stores for agricultural purposes and one blacksmith shop. Five more businesses were added over time: a bank, insurance company, dry goods store and pharmacy/ chemist until 1923 when the last business closed down because of World War I economic restrictions on trade with Germany; however, post office operations continued until 1951 . In that year, Saraland's first school opened up to serve children between the ages of 4 and 12 years old as well as adults who did not have their own children home during school hours or could not find someone to take care of them during school days due to illness or war service opportunities available then for young men age 17-21 years old (the only breadwinner at home). At this time also came into existence what are now community hallways which connect different parts of town center such as streets leading off from main thoroughfares running through town limits includingthose near present day High School campus which remain today connected via several corridors - including one connecting Administration Building lot across street from high school with gymnasium addition facing Administration Building lot; also hallway extending east from Administration building leads north to south side next door to First Baptist Church - second largest congregation in town after Methodist In 1923 – just prior to prohibition – local businessmen formed an advertising agency called Jaffray & Associates which served all types of businesses within city limits with its headquarters located on Main Street opposite current day courthouse steps before moving into larger quarters overlooking administration building wing next door some years later ; Prohibition ended 27 years later effective January 3rd 1933alcohol became legal throughout most United States alcohol consumption increased precipitously leading many people displaced by expanding industry etc.; Post Office closed effective Sept 30th 1951; Mayor selected architect named Jorgensen who designedCommunity Center being modernist styled brick buildings fronting large lawn w/high wall fence thru open space rear having full length driveway bisected by two small streets serving both buildings parking structure garage attached back lot accessed by alley way leading northeast out front

Saraland is a small town located in Morgan County, Alabama. It was founded in 1819 by John Saraland and his family. The Saralands were originally farmers who located their farmstead on the edge of a flat area that now contains Saraland Cemetery. In 1834, John's son-in-law, Nathan Bedford Forrest, purchased the land where Saraland currently stands and began to build a plantation known as "Iuka". At first there were only about 60 slaves working on Iuka at any given time but over time the number grew to thousands. These slaves worked various jobs on Iuka such as planting cotton, caring for horses, picking fruit trees, cooking meals and doing other tasks that didn't require manual labor. This type of slavery allowed African Americans to own property and participate in society while still maintaining their enslavement status. As Iuka grew larger it also began to become more luxurious with well- designed gardens, large beds of flowers and even a small schoolhouse served as part of the estate. The slaveowners enjoyed having these lush plantations surrounded by poor rural settlers who could not afford them or simply did not have access to such luxury amenities. In 1865, Confederate troops liberated Iuka from Confederate ownership which caused many people in Saraland to celebrate what had once been their home country's downfall. After the war ended however many people realized that Reconstruction had not gone as planned and blacks continued to be oppressed within American society. Many black men also decided to migrate northward in search of work opportunities during this time period which led to increased tension between white and black communities in America. In 1928 Saraland was annexed by Mobile County which made it an official municipality rather than just an unincorporated community like it had been before
Saraland is located in Southern Alabama, about 20 miles south of the city of Birmingham. The town was founded by a group of settlers from Delaware in 1837. It grew quickly and soon had a population of over 100 people. In 1840, Saraland became the first town in Alabama to have a school system. Today, Saraland remains an important community with close ties to Birmingham.
