Saraland is an unincorporated community in Shelby County, Alabama, United States. The Saraland post office was established in 1885, and remained in operation until it closed in 1953. At the time of its closure, Saraland had a population of just three people. The community was located near present-day Huntsville and Birmingham. Saraland was named after Captain John saraliensis, who explored the area in 1782 during the French Louisiana Purchase. Captain saraliensis's group arrived at Saraland Bay on November 11, 1782, while under the command of Sieur de La Fayette. A plaque located at Saraland Bay commemorates this event. The first settler to live in what is now Saraland was Wm. Senter who migrated from Mobile County in 1836. He built a cabin on a bluff overlooking the bay which he called "The Ark". The town soon grew around Senter's cabin with other early settlers including James Vann (1837-1911), Caryl Ladd (1839-1924), Daniel Hogg (1841-1925), Levi Cobb (1843-1920) and Isaac Farnsworth (1845-1927). In 1885, postmaster John Denton erected a small frame building for use as a store and office within the limits of present day Saraldale School District 2A which included much of what is now downtown Huntsville
Saraland was founded in 1847 by some of the first white men to settle in the area. The town was named for a salt lick on the Alabama River. It grew quickly, and within a few years had a population of over 100 people. In 1861, Saraland became part of the newly formed Confederacy during the American Civil War. By 1865, it had fallen to Union forces and was burned tothe ground.
