Saraland is a town in Bibb County, Alabama, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. Saraland is part of the Birmingham metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1853 by Captain John Denton and his family. It was named for General John Pemberton Saraland, who fought in the Mexican-American War and later served as governor of Alabama. The first post office in Saraland was established in 1855. In 1865, Captain Denton donated land to build a school and store near where he now resides. The school became known as Brown High School and continued to serve the community until it closed in 1984. In 1898, Isaac Griggs organized a group of farmers called the "Alabama Agricultural Society" to purchase land east of downtown from Jno Griggs on what is now US 31/30 serving as their farm complex today known as Griggs Center which includes a grocery store, two restaurants (one Greek), two banks (First National Bank and Citizens National Bank), an insurance company ( State Farm) and numerous other businesses over time including golf courses, shopping malls and several homes which still stand today! In 1951-1952 Judge Wiley Easley served as President of this society with jurisdiction over most of central Bibb County A new courthouse replaced the old one that burned down during World War II The town's first mayor was Wm A Hargrave In 1957-1958 when decisions were made about building schools within city limits there were protests because some residents felt that their home would be taken away if their community had more than one high school Some people also voiced concerns about transportation being available to them if they lived within city limits rather then having to travel into nearby Birmingham

Saraland, Alabama was founded in 1871 and named for the town of Saraland, Michigan. The town had been abandoned by its agricultural community after an economic depression. A group of prosperous businessmen decided to start a new town in what is now western Mobile County, Alabama. They surveyed the area and found that there were no good sites for farming or development. So they began to lay out the townsite on land that was then part of Tuscaloosa County. The first settler in Saraland was George Biddle, who arrived on October 7, 1871. Other early residents included J.B. Grimes and his brother-in-law Jesse Huggins. By 1881, Saraland had a population of about 350 people and several stores and houses were built. In 1886, the first school was built in Saraland with Wm Hodge as teacher. The town's first post office opened in 1889 and it remained open until 1955! In 1906, John Fenton bought 500 acres of land east of Saraland from William Demarest for $5 per acre! He began to plan the development of what would become known as Fenton Park which includes today's downtown SARALAND! Fenton Park became a recreational center for the local community with tennis courts (1911), baseball fields (1912), swimming pools (1914), a movie theater (1920), restaurant(s) (1920-1925), and more! In 1925, SARALAND became incorporated as a city! It boasted an population of over 1,000 people by 1940! During World War II, SARALAND played host to many military installations including Fort Worth Army Air Field #1 which housed British bombers duringthe war; Fort Casey which housed American P-51 Mustangs duringWWII; also Ft Wainwright which hosted Japanese prisoners during WWII; additionally many other smaller facilities were constructed here such as airfields (#2 & #3). After World War II ended however SARALAND reverted back to its original rural character unfortunately without any major infrastructure projects being undertaken throughout the years apart from some housing developments around 2001-2005 when cell phone service started making life much easier!! However things are changing again with new construction happening all around town along with some exciting plans for future growth - stay tuned
The first Europeans to explore and settle in what is now Saraland, Alabama were Frenchmen named Jacques Marquette and Pierre La Salle. They arrived in 1686, when the area was part of the Spanish colony of Louisiana. The two men explored the region for several months before returning home.
