Saraland is a town in Baldwin County, Alabama, United States. The population was 1,036 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Mobile–Baldwin City, Alabama Metropolitan Statistical Area. Saraland was created in 1892 as a result of an act of the Alabama Legislature. It was named for Captain John Saraland, who had fought in the Indian Wars and also served as a US military officer during World War I. The first settler in Saraland was James Hagerty. He arrived there on October 15, 1892. Other early settlers included Jordon Burgess and George Wills from Tennessee and James Boyle from Washington state. Captain John Saraland came to SARALAND on October 17th, 1892 with his family and set up camp on what is now Main Street. After some initial difficulties he started a general store which prospered for many years until it closed around 1907 or 1908 due to economic problems caused by the Panic of 1893-1894 In 1895 Captain John Saraland married Fannie Bowen (daughter of Major General Averell Bowen). They moved to Montgomery where they raised their four children: Fannie (baptized December 3rd 1890), Captains John Gentry Jr., William George (born September 20th 1893), Chester Ewing (October 14th 1897) and Fannie Jane Bowen-Saraland (March 2nd 1899). In 1911Captain Gentry became sheriff of Baldwin County after being elected as a Democrat from Section 6a seat vacated by Judge Robert Bigham who had run for office as an independent candidate but lost to Republican nominee Willard Klinefeldt After leaving Montgomery for good in 1912 Captains Gentry Jr., William George and Chester Ewing all joined Captains John Gentry Sr.'s Union Army service during World War I John Gentry Sr.'s unit number was 5479 Infantry Company D out of Camp Butler near Macon, Georgia during World War I When America entered World War II Captain Gentry enlisted in the United States Army Air Forces becoming Lieutenant Colonel . On July 25 1944 he crashed his Boeing 707 into clouds over Point Lookout NP while en route to Melville AFB NY when one engine failed just before touchdown killing both pilots & all passengers
Saraland was founded in 1819 by General John C. Breckinridge and his wife with the intention of developing a new cotton plantation east of Mobile. The area now known as Saraland was once part of the Cherokee Nation. After the American Civil War, the region became known as Reconstruction South Alabama, due to its large African American population.
