Saraland is a town in Alabama, United States. The population was 1,817 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Birmingham Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first forever settlement in Saraland came about as result of an accidental discovery of oil by John Hance and his associates while prospecting for oil wells in 1901 near present day Saraland. Hance and his partners were drilling when they found something unusual – a field of sand and gravel that looked exactly like oil shale! From this accidental find, Saraland sprang up quickly as a small town - its name derived from the Arabic word "sarawad" meaning "oil." Oil production began in earnest in 1905, but it would not be until 1917 that SARALAND became official home to the Shell Oil Company's Refinery #1 on Second Street. This refinery produced gasoline and other fuels used by local businesses and residents alike. In 1929, SARALAND hosted its first major industry fair which showcased products from both local and imported manufacturers. Some of thelater notable companies associated with SARALAND include Montgomery Steel Business Park (1929-1974), Citizens National Bank (1935-1975), Southern Bell Telephone Co., Western Electric Railway Company (1936-1950), First National Bank (1945-1991) and PPG Industries Inc.(1978-) In January 1955, Saraland was posthumously awarded city status by the Alabama Legislature due to strong community support for the proposal throughout much of their history. The same year saw Saraland's incorporation into Birmingham as a separately incorporated city with all full powers granted to it including: street cleaning/maintenance; library; fire protection; zoning; economic development authority; ability to borrow money etc.; however these powers were eventually repealed upon annexation into Birmingham proper effective December 1, 1966 . As part of this process, all former City Council members who had served prior thereto were also forced out via term limits established pursuant to state law at that time. The Saraland community is located in Baldwin County, Alabama. The original town was founded by John and Sarah French in 1819. A post office was established in 1821, and the name of the community was changed to Saraland in 1825. The first store was built in 1827. In 1830, a school was opened; it remained operational until 1951. In 1840, Isaac Jenson moved to Saraland from Mobile; he became the first white settler. He purchased 5 acres of land and started a farm which yielded crops for export to Nashville and other markets. In 1850, Abraham Adams arrived from Tennessee with his family; he also started a farm at Saraland. By 1860, there were about 60 residents living in Saraland. By 1870, there were 350 people living here; most of them were farmers who raised cotton and livestock. After Reconstruction ended in 1865, many African Americans left Alabama for northern states such as Illinois and Minnesota because of Reconstruction policies that favored white Southerners over black citizens. In 1901-1902, locals built the first municipal building on what is now Main Street; it served as a courthouse until 1955 when it burned down. The first schoolhouse was built on what is now Fourth Street in 1912-13; it served as an elementary school until 1954 when it burned down too. A small chapel/church serving the town Was founded on Cemetery Road just north of where Main Street meets Fourth Street in 1913-14.; It continued operation until 1951 when it also burned down
