Saraland, Alabama is a small town in the southeast corner of Alabama. It lies on the Gulf Coast and has a population of about 2,000 people. The town was founded in 1867 by white settlers who came up from Mobile County. The first post office was established in Saraland in 1868. The name Saraland comes from the Choctaw word "sarala" meaning "a place where there is much cane." The town was originally called East Porterville until it changed its name to Saraland in 1867 because of the abundance of canes near by. In 1865, General John C. Breckinridge appointed A.W. Pinkney as commissioner for Indian affairs in Alabama and he recommended that East Porterville be renamed Saraland to honor him and his predecessor, General James Hancey. Saraland experienced some growth during World War II when many black soldiers served in the military or were drafted into service. However, the population dropped during the war because so many people left for good reasons such as racism or discrimination against African Americans living in white households without rights or benefits like housing or education opportunities available to them. After World War II ended, Saraland slowly began to rebound but still has a low population density due to its location on the coast and lack of industry or jobs outside of agriculture and fishing which are primary sources of income for most residents

The first school in Saraland was built in 1840 and the first church in 1850. In 1861, Saraland became an Alabama state village and by 1871 it had a population of one hundred people. From 1861 until 1865, Saraland was part of the Confederate States of America during the American Civil War. After the war ended, Saraland surrendered to Union forces on May 10th 1865. On that day, Union General Grant arrived at Saraland with orders to disband all enemy forces within the town limits within one hour or he would fire upon them from orbit! In 1870, Captain Stevenson donated seventeen acres (6 hectares) of land east of downtown SARALAND to help start a city government and community center which is now known as City Hall Annexe
