Prichard is located on U.S. Route 72 and Alabama State Route 381 east of Decatur. The community was founded by Ephraim Prichard in 1881 as a small trading post near the present-day intersection of U.S. Routes 72 and 381. He named his post after himself, Pritchard (or Provincess) Island in the Gulf of Mexico where he had been born in 1785 to a family of naval officers and merchants from Virginia City, California). In 1884, Prichard built a log cabin on what is now his farmstead for himself and his wife Sarah Clements Prichards (1827-1901), who later became known as "The Belle of Prichard."
