Tasers, or stun guns, are firearms that use electric current to stun or kill human beings. They originated in the United States in the 1970s as a response to protests over police brutality. The first taser was patented by John Hanbury in 1976 and became commercially available in 1978. Since its introduction, tasers have been used by law enforcement officers around the world, most notably in the United Kingdom and Australia. In 2017, Taser International announced a $1 billion investment for research and development of new taser models.
There has been a lot of discussion about tasers since their introduction in the early 1990s. Tasers are now commonly used by law enforcement and first responders to control individuals during confrontations. However, there is still much confusion about what they are and how they work. This paper will explore the basics of tasers and provide an understanding for why they have become so popular in police departments and first responder communities. Tasers were designed as a less-lethal means of subduing people who had attacked or threaten others with serious injury or death (e.g., a knife attack). They work by grounding the victim's arm against a hard surface, causing enough pain to incapacitate them. The victim then can be restrained without having to use force if necessary. There are many different types of tasers, each with its own advantages and disadvantages relative to other options available to law enforcement officers and first responders. The electrical current that travels through a taser is created when two electrodes are connected together in series. When someone is shocked with a taser, their heart rate increases significantly due to an electric field that moves across the skin from electrode to electrode in rapid succession (see Figure 1). This high-voltage electricity causes intense pain at any point on the body where it strikes, regardless of whether it is directly above or below the skin level (see Figure 2).

Despite their widespread use among law enforcement professionals all over the world, there is little consensus about how best to deal with tasers – particularly when it comes to training officers on how to use them safely and effectively. Currently, there is no internationally agreed upon standard technique for using tasers – let alone registering public safety concerns related to them such as crowd control or self-defense scenarios. On October 3, 2014, the St. Petersburg Times reported that tasers had been used on two people in Pinellas County. At least one of these incidents is considered to be a police brutality case.
Prichard is a town in Clarke County, Alabama, United States. The population was 2,594 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Clarke County. The town was founded in 1810 by John Prichard and named for him. The first school in Prichard was built on the site of what is now the old post office. In 1824, Daniel Boone crossed the Laurel River here to enter into an treaty with the Chickasaw Indians. He left behind his rifle and shield as a token of peace. A plaque located near Prichard's courthouse today celebrates this event. In 1851, John Fenton bought land here from General James Hance and began developing it into a cotton plantation called “Fenton” plantations were developed throughout Alabama during this time period primarily through enslaved African Americans who labored under white owners until their emancipation in 1865.
