Prichard is a city in Alabama, United States. The population was 34,748 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Marshall County. The town began as a small settlement on the banks of the Mobile River, about three miles (5 km) upstream from present-day Prichard. A log ferry crossed the river for transportation to and from nearbyMobile and other settlements. In 1823, John Denny founded what would become Prichard after purchasing 800 acres (30 ha) near present-day Mobile. Denny named his new community for William Pritchardshire, an Englishman who had come to Mobile in 1795 as a surgeon with General James Wilkinson's army during the American Revolutionary War. Denny's Ferry arrived at Prichard in 1824; by 1830, it had served as a general store and post office. In 1834, John Southerland sold out his interest in Denny's Ferry and partnered with Daniel Gentry to create what became Gentry & Southerland Logging Company. The company built sawmills and other millwork throughout southern Alabama until its bankruptcy in 1865 due to lack of competition from cheaperlogging companies operating outside of Alabama at that time. In 1840, Obadiah Baldwin founded Baldwin's Mills near present-day Mobile; this company also built mills in Prichard and several other towns along the Nonpareil River before becoming bankrupt in 1851 due to low demand for its products statewide. By 1861, only two small settlements remained within present-day Marshall County: one on the east side of Chickasaw Lake south of wherepresent-day Prattville now stands; the other on behalfeof settlers north of Chickasaw Lake near modern day Montgomery; both areas were part of Marshallsville Township which was organized under Union rule following Confederate collapse around that time. By 1870s most residents residing withinMarshall County had either moved away or left for economic reasons due to increased production across newly acquired states during Reconstruction era including Texas following Civil War; much like today many residents still live inside their original counties today despite numerous moves over time withinAlabama’s borders

Their son John FentonPrichard Jr., who also fought in the war, became mayor of Prichard after his father's death. Heserved as mayor from 1943 to 1951 and from 1957 to 1967; he is currently an elected member of the Alabama State Senate representing District 9B (Tuscaloosa County). The first store opened in 1836 by Captain John Prichard and his wife Lydia on what is now Main Street near present day Highway 494; this store later became known as "The Old Store." After markets were established throughout southernAlabama during the 1830s-40s, Captains John Henson & others began marketing their goods direct to Mobileans via horseback or wagon trains which brought produce from Georgia & other Southern states directly intoMobile Bayou where consumers could purchase these items fresh or frozen within 3-4 days depending on availability
The town of Prichard, Alabama was founded in 1837 by a group of farmers led by W.P. Prichard. The town initially grew around the local post office and store, but soon developed into a small village with its own school, churches, and businesses. The population of Prichard began to grow rapidly thanks to the influx of new settlers and the natural resources that were available in the area. By 1840, Prichard had reached a population of over 100 people and had begun to build up some significant infrastructure such as a bank and a hospital. In 1851, Prichard passed through an act called the "Alabama Purchase" which transferred ownership of much of what is now Alabama from Mexico to United States Bogus Creek County for $3 million dollars. This act helped solidify Prichard's status as one of America's most important agricultural towns and contributed to its growth in popularity over the years.
