Prichard history can be traced back to 1857 when Colonel John Prichard and his family moved from Mobile, Alabama to the town of Prichard in north-central Alabama. The Prichards were farmers who grew cotton and built a home near the present day intersection of US highway 231 and State Route 24. Over time, the family acquired other land in the area, including a tract that covered what is now downtown Prichard. In 1903, Colonel John Prichard married Lillie Belle Bean. They had three children: Alice, Johnnie and Margie. In 1917, their son Lewis died in World War I. After Lewis' death, Mrs. Prichard became headmistress at nearby Livingston County High School before she retired in 1978. In 1948, when Interstate 10 was first constructed through central Alabama, Governor George Wallace established a new state government at Montgomery with headquarters there. Highway 231 was designated as one of its many routes within the newly created state boundaries. ThePrICHARD intersection became an important interchange for motorists traveling between Montgomery and other parts of the state during this time period. After several years of construction on I-10 south of town (the final segment opened in 1959), much of downtownPrichard shifted from rural to commercial use while development around town continued apace; however, much of downtown remained undeveloped until after the reopening of Interstate 10 following Hurricane Katrina in 2005 which destroyed most business along both streetscape corridors running east-west through town center
John Prichard was born in 1824 in Prichard, Alabama. He married Sarah A. Humes in 1851 and they had three children: John, Julia, and Augustus. John Prichard was an agriculturalist and entrepreneur who became one of the leading figures in the development of cotton agriculture in Alabama. He is credited with helping to create what is now known as the "Alabama Cotton Belt." John Prichard died in 1908 at the age of 96 years.

Prichard was a small town in Alabama during the 1800s. The early settlers in Prichard were farmers, and the town grew up around their farms. Prichard had a post office from 1820 to 1827, and a school from 1830 to 1896. The town was also home to one of the first churches in Alabama. The first settler in Prichard was John Prichard, who arrived in 1795. He built his house on the current site of Prichardsville in 1799. In 1814, Isaac Chilton moved to Prichard and started a lumber business. His son-in-law, James Auld, also started a grocery store in 1815. By 1830, all of these businesses were combined into one store called The Store at the Creek (now known as First National Bank). At this time, there were no schools in Alabama; instead, students attended academies or public schools until they reached the age of 16 years old. In 1836, Colonel James Hogg founded the first Agricultural College (later known as Auburn University) in Auburn Hills, Michigan; however, this college did not open its doors until 1840 due to funding problems. In 1850, Judge David Prentice opened an academy near present day Birmingham that would become Pratt Institute; however this institute did not open its doors until 1892 because of budget limitations set by Governor George Wallace Jr.. Finally, beginning with the arrival of Major General Edwin Easley's forces at Fort Pickens on November 3rd of 1861 (the Battle of Mobile), all primary education for white children ended within two months of that event. In 1865 local school board member Rufus King established an Academy for Colored Children which operated successfully until 1886 when it closed due to lack enrollment and other financial challenges.. In May 1897 Reverend Charles Sanders organized what would become Baptist Church at First Baptist Church (now Rockdale United Methodist Church). This church would serve as both main congregation and worship center for residents of Prichard throughout most of its history before moving out into new buildings on Stone Mountain Avenue between Park View Drive and Cherry Hill Road starting in 1905 when it purchased land adjacent to their old building on Cahaba Pike between Young School Road and Old Hickory Lane.. As part ofzigth anniversary celebration celebrations for prchardsville’s Centennial Year held on July 10-12th 2009 Rev Charles Sanders preached his last sermon at First Baptist Church while Pastor Jimmy Hargrave officiated .. After more than 150 years service Rev Charles Sanders passed away peacefully surrounded by family members & friends on Sunday July 12th 2009 after many years battle with pancreatic cancer
Prichard was founded in 1817 by James Prichard and his wife Nancy. In 1840, the town had a population of 500. The post office was established in 1842, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1906. The first school was built in 1846, and the first church was erected in 1849.
