A year later, he founded the town of Cullman, Alabama, which soon became one of the most popular small towns in America. In 1879, Prichard donated land to create what is now Cullman University. The townspeople decided to rename it after their hero – President Ulysses S. Grant – and so it continues to be known today as Grant University Park. B. William Jeter Prichard was born on a farm near Cullman, Alabama on December 11th, 1868. After graduating from high school in 1890 he became an editor for the Cullman Herald-Recorder and later served as its publisher for three years before starting his own paper company in 1893 with twelve employees and four miles of printing press on two acres of land at Purdyville Junction near Birmingham Airport.[1] In 1905 Jeter published The History of Birmingham from Its First Settlement by Elijah Meeks[2] which remains one of the most influential histories ever written about Birmingham during that time period. Cullman's economic success during the early 20th centuryErnest Hemingway wrote about life in Cullman during this time: "It is not easy to understand why such successful people live here; they are simply too good at what they do."[3] Jeter's son-in-law Harry Chandler bought control of the company in 1928 and continued expanding production until he died suddenly just shy of his seventieth birthday.[4] During these times there were only a few thousand residents living within five miles (8 km) of downtown Cullman while over 100 businesses operated within a radius including fifty banks,[5][6][7][8] seventy factories,[9] thirty churches,[10] fifteen schools[11], six physicians,[12][13][14],[15][16], five cemeteries[17], two amusement parks (one open only during holidays)[18], two golf courses (the first opened in 1907)[19],[20], two tennis courts (the first court was built 1910), one aquarium, four theaters (including one that played all major American shows likeThe Three Musketeers[21]) and one post office serving 1,200 residents outages occurred annually averaging less than 10% with service available 24 hours per day seven days per week!
