The community was founded in 1881 when two brothers named George Prichard and John Prichard pooled their money to buy 100 acres of land southeast of what is now Auburn, Alabama. It began as a farming village with six homes and 50 residents. In 1928, Prichard became one of only two towns in Montgomery County (the other being Silver Spring) that were incorporated as villages without voting rights. In 1951, four-time Olympic gold medallist Jesse Owens came to Prichard for a golf tournament and stayed for three days before returning home to Atlanta. Attendance at local golf tournaments dwindled after this event but has slowly increased over time due to tourism reasons alone; today there are more than 20 tournaments held annually at various venues within driving distance of Prichard's downtown core
