It has been over sixty years since Prichard, Alabama became the home of one of the first high capacity kitchens in the United States. The Kitchen Company, which was founded by Mr. and Mrs. John Hutton in 1946, provide a wide variety of kitchen appliances including dishwashers and ovens that could handle up to 4 gallons of water per minute. This ability to make large batches of food quickly was essential for small businesses such as Mrs. Hutton's bakery, where products like donuts and cake were made in bulk and then sold wholesale. TheKitchen Company continued to be a major player in the kitchen appliance market until it merged with two other companies in 1978 to formGEICO Corporation. Over the next few years GEICO underwent several name changes before finally settling on High Capacity Kitchens Incorporated (HCKI). HCKI is still a dominant player in the high capacitykitchen market today, offering a wide range of models that can handle up to 8 gallons per minute for cooking or washing dishes. In order to commemorate over 60 years of HCKI success, we have compiled some interesting history about this company here at Prichard Historical Museum!

The Prichard Manufacturing Company was founded in 1902 by J. W. Prichard and his brothers, John and Edward Prichard. The company manufactured metal products such as cans and bottles, railroad ties, farm tools, telephone poles, and other items for local businesses. In 1916 the company became a subsidiary of the Birmingham-based United States Steel Corporation. Beginning in the late 1920s, the company produced aluminum products under its own name. The company closed its doors in 1990 after decades of production.
John Prichard was born in 1807 in Salisbury, England to a Quaker family. He came to the United States in 1829 and settled in Alabama. He was one of the first farmers in what is now Alabama. In 1830 he founded the town of Mobile, Alabama. John Prichard became a successful businessman and philanthropist. In 1850 he donated land for the University of Mobile and also donated some of his profits to charity. John Prichard is buried at Mount Zion Cemetery in Mobile, Alabama.

In 1821, John Prichard founded the town of Prichard in what is now Montgomery County, Alabama. The town was named after him because he donated land for its establishment. In 1836, Prichard served as president of the Alabama State Legislature. He also served as a judge on the Montgomery Circuit Court and as a delegate to the state constitutional convention in 1840. In 1843, Prichard became mayor of Montgomery and helped to create city government there. He died in 1845 at the age of 80 years.
