Prichard is a small town in Marshall County, Alabama, United States. The population was 496 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Huntsville-Decatur metropolitan area. The town was founded by John Prichard in 1827. He started a flour mill and then a bakery. The mill closed in 1836, but the bakery continued to operate until it closed in 1865. The townoup was renamed after General Andrew Jackson on May 3, 1868. John Pritchard married Sarah Ann Hardeman in 1829 and they had six children: John Pritchard Jr., Polly, James Fenton Pritchard, Margaret Atherton Pritchard (maiden name), William Hernando Pritchard (born 1830). In 1840 John moved his family to Decatur County with some land he acquired from his father-in-law Nicholas Hogue and settled near present day Decatur High School on what is now known as Park Boulevard. There he met Martha Burns who became his wife and they had seven children: John Wirt Hardeman Prichard IV (1840–1915), Anne Burnette Hardeman Prichard (1842–1920), Mary Etta Hardeman Prichard (1845–1925), Anna Ella HardemanPrichard (1848–1945), Edward Everett HodgkinsonHardmanPrichard(1900–1983) and Franklin Dillard HodkinsonHardmanPrichardsen(1908–1988). From this marriage two daughters were born: Eleanor Roosevelt HodkinsonPritchardsenand Alice Pauline HodkinsonPritchardsen.(1914−2002). After the death of their mother in 1920 John Sr. married Lillie Phelps Lewisohn on October 21st of that year at First Baptist Church which located just east of where modern day Park Boulevard meets Old Highway 129 west of present day White Settlement Road.(Lillie Phelps Lewisohn widow Richardson remarried Clyde Culp lawson)). They had five children: Eleanor Roosevelt HodkinsonPitcherdsenand Alice Pauline HodkinsonPitcherdsen.(1928−2001) , Franklin Dillard HodkinsonHardmanPrirchardsenseny(1908−1988) and Elliott Roosevelt HodkinsonPitcherdsenseny(1945−2008). After World War II the family moved back to Decatur County where they built their own home on what is now called Eighth Street south of Main Street.(Eleanor Roosevelt HodkinsonPitcherdsenand Alice Pauline HodikiniPitcherdsenseny)(1945−2008)). They also operated a restaurant there called Empire Cafe from 1949 to 1977 before it went out of business.(Eleanor Roosevelt HodgkinsonDillardHodkinsonSennetty)(1945−2008)). In 1957 the town voted to annex neighboring Cullman because it had more people and jobs than Cullman City did.(Cullman annexing Prichard Town Officials Minutes - 1907)) . Today much of downtown Prichard is still owned by Mr./Ms.] Ethel Pruitt Hicks [daughter] who ran an antique store there from 1978 until her death in 2002 while her son David Hicks operated the store since 2004.) After leaving Decatur County for good Mrs.] Ethel Pruitt Hicks [daughter] reopened Empire Cafe until her death also in 2002.) On July 1st 1969 she donated all proceeds from Empire Cafe's sale to local charities including Boys & Girls Club Of Prattville Incorporated which helps needy families throughout Marshall County
Prichard was a small town in Eastern Alabama from 1821 until it merged into Tuscaloosa County in 1875. The original community, located on the east side of the Mobile River, was named for Colonel John Prichard and his family. The first post office was established in 1824, and by 1830 there were three stores and one hotel in the community. In 1835, a school was built and by 1840 there were twelve families living in the town. By 1865, only two families remained in Prichard. The first courthouse was built in 1826 and by 1830 it had five residents. In 1840, a jail replaced the old school building. In 1865, a cotton gin was built and by 1870 it had six residents. In 1875, Prichard merged with Tuscaloosa County to form present-day Montgomery County.
