Prichard, Alabama is a small town in the U.S. state of Alabama. The population was 7,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Huntsville-Decatur metropolitan area and is located about 50 miles (80 km) south of Birmingham. The first person to call Prichard home was George Washington Prichard in 1830. George W."Pritchard" as he was known locally, started out as a farmer but soon became interested in trade and commerce and built up a successful business importing goods from Europe. His son, James Pritchard followed his father into business ownership and served as president of the First National Bank of Prichard for many years before passing away in 1935. One of Prichard's most famous citizens was Dr John Cheadle who served as both an physician and mayor during the late 1800s and early 1900s. Dr Cheadle was born on a farm near Prichard in 1825 and attended school here until age 16 when he moved to Mobile to study medicine under Dr Samuel Morse Hilliard at Johns Hopkins University where he earned his medical degree in 1848. He then practiced medicine for several years before returning to Prichard, becoming one of the town's first residents; he remained there until his death in 1916 at the age of 85 years old! During World War II, Prichard played host to some very important military personnel including General Curtis LeMay who later directed American air power against Japan during that conflict; also living here during that time were General Dwight Eisenhower, Supreme Commander Allied Expeditionary Force; Admiral Chester Nimitz; Rear Admiral Edward Jinks; Major General Leslie Ritchie; Lieutenant Colonel Lucius Clay Jr.; Captain Alfred Pyle Jr.; Colonel James Auchinleck Jr.; Commodore David Sarnoff etc..
