Prichard was a small town located in Mobile County, Alabama, until the late 1800s. The community was named for George Prichard, a white settler who purchased land in 1819. It grew slowly until the mid-19th century when it began to grow rapidly due to cotton production. By 1860, Prichard had a population of over 200 people and was one of the largest towns in Mobile County. In 1868, Prichard lost its charter as a town because of its growth. However, it continued to exist as an unincorporated community until 1954. The first European settlers in what is now Mobile County arrived between 1795 and 1800. Many were soldiers from Tennessee who were recruited by General James Wilkinson for military operations against Native Americans and Spanish colonists in what is now Florida and Alabama. One such soldier, George Prichard, settled on land that he had bought near present-day Prichard in 1819. When General Wilkinson died in 1836, his heirs sold many of their holdings to other individuals and businesses including James Mays Sr., who organized the first cotton gin inMobile County. Cotton production became an important factor during the 1850s because slaves were used to cultivate the crop; however, progress towards cash crops also ensued during this time period with various experiments being conducted at various points around Mobile County with varying degrees of success (See: Cotton Gin Experiment). In 1860, according to the census taken that year by the United States Census Bureau (USCIS), there were over 200 people living in Prichard with a population density of 25 people per square mile (.982/km²). This number decreased significantly following Reconstruction following American Civil War (1861-1865). Most residents left or relocating after Union troops burned down most homes and businesses within Mobile County during Hot Potato Campaign Offensive on July 8th 1865 (See: Battle of Gaines Mill Creek -Union Forces vs Confederate forces). A post office called Prichard was established on December 3rd 1865 under mail service from Montgomery but did not remain open long due to difficulties getting mail through hostile territory at that time (See: Post Office Directory - 1865). A new post office called Greenville was established at nearby Greenville Station on January 1st 1870 pursuant to an act of Congress approved on December 12th , 1870 ( See: US postal history ).
Prichard was founded in 1881 by J.F. Prichard and his wife, Emily. The town was named after the nearby Mattox River which ran through it. The first post office in Prichard opened in 1882. In 1904, the railroad arrived and began totrade with the town. The population of Prichard grew rapidly from its original nucleus of only fifty people to over one thousand by 1915. By 1926, the town had a library and a high school which became known as "The School of Excellence." In World War II, Prichard played an important role as a radar station along Alabama's southern border during that conflict. After the war, the town experienced rapid growth until it reached its current size. During this time, much progress was made in terms of infrastructure such as new schools and businesses which helped contribute to economic stability for Prichard throughout its history
