In 1835, Prichard married Sarah Padgett and continued to operate his business until his death in 1856. His wife served as president of the town for many years after he's death. The John Prichard House still stands today and is used as a museum.
The town of Prichard, Alabama was founded in 1847 by Squire John Prichard and his wife Althea. The town developed around the railroad depot, which became a popular stop for travelers. In 1873, the first high school was established in the town. In 1952, the towns post office was discontinued and merged into that of nearby Phenix City.
