Prichard is a small town in Butler County, Alabama, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Huntsville-Decatur, Alabama Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded by Captain John Prichard on March 4, 1818 as a settlement near the present day intersection of US 69 and 10th Street. Captain Prichard named it for him and his brother Samuel Prichard. The first post office in the community was established in 1827. In 1881, James Fenton erected a sawmill and gristmill on Elm River in what is now downtown Prichard. These mills were among the earliest large businesses in town and produced flour, feedstocks for making paper products, and other supplies until they closed down around 1940. By 1900, there were only five homebuilders left in town with over 2,000 residents; all but one of these homes had been replaced by commercial buildings since then. The downtown area has experienced significant renovation over the past few decades including new sidewalks and streetlights; a new park that includes a playground and basketball court; updated architecture throughout most of town; as well as an increase in housing options due to slow growth within the local real estate market after World War II brought about increased demand for acreage outside of town limits due to agricultural production (the downtown area has seen some retail development since then). In recent years there has also been an increase in interest Downtown from students looking for quaint old-fashioned shopping streetscapes rather than more modern shopping malls or high-rise apartments; however this growth still remains slower than surrounding areas which have seen much recent commercial development (e.g., US 69 HAS BEEN rerouted through downtown since it changed its name from Red Road to 12th Street).

Prichard, Alabama is a small town located in Marshall County, Alabama. The population was 2,903 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Marshall County. The town is named after General John Prichard and his family who lived there during the early 1800s. The first settler in what is now Prichard was James Witherspoon. He came to this area in 1819 and built a house on the south side of Main Street. The first store in Prichard was established by Isaac Powell in 1827. In 1834, Abraham Love came to Prichard and started a grocery store. By 1840, there were three stores open in Prichard with a population of over 100 people. In 1846, two men from Prattville came to Prichard with their families and started an agricultural center around Center Road which would become known as Prattville Mills. The milling industry quickly grew in Prichard and by 1850, there were six mills operating out of town including one for cotton ginning and another for spinning woolen yarns into cloths and overalls. In 1865, General George Armstrong arrived at Prattville Mills with 1,500 soldiers to start World War I . He needed food supplies so he set up a military post near the mill called Armstrong's Store which still stands today on Centre Road near present day Weldon Drive. After war ended, the post was abandoned and it is now part of Municipal Park #2 off Highway 64 just east of Jerome Boulevard (exit 342). In 1915-16 local businessman J C White developed Whitehaven Shopping Center which has been dilapidated ever since but can be seen from Interstate 20 nearby through glass panels that have been covering up most of its original facade since 1976 when it closed down due to health code violations
In 1819, John Prichard and his family settled in what is now Prichard, Alabama. He built a small log cabin on the bluff overlooking the Mobile River. He began to farm and sell goods from his store. In 1836, he married Anna Maynard and they started a family. They moved to Tuscaloosa in 1840 when Alabama became a state. John was an important factor in developing the city of Tuscaloosa.
