Prichard is a town in Chambers County, Alabama, United States. The population was 1,813 at the 2010 census. Its post office was established in 1868 and has been in operation since that time. The area now known as Prichard was first settled by English colonists in the late 17th century. The town was named for General Samuel Pritchard, an American Revolutionary War hero who commanded a brigade of British soldiers near Mobile Bay during the Battle of Mobile Bay on December 12, 1780. The community began to grow rapidly after it was designated as a city in 1907. In 1916 the city merged with other nearby towns to form the present-day Chambers County city of Prichard. During World War II, Prichard became one of the most important military centers in Alabama because its location lies within 3 miles of both Birmingham and Montgomery proper on three different military bases: Fort Mitchell (now Fort Huachuca), Fort Pickett (now Joint Base Lewis-McChord) and Camp Butler (now Maxwell Air Force Base). In 1957, operations at Montgomery's new airport were transferred from Birmingham to Prichard due to air traffic control congestion at that airport. As a result of this merger,Prichard had become one of only two cities in Alabama without its own municipal government—the other being Tuscaloosa—until 1978 when it joined District 5 of Montgomery's general purpose local government system . Today much of what once made up downtown Prichard is gone but portions have been rebuilt and are used as housing developments or commercial areas such as Southern Market Plaza which opened in 2007 just east off I-10 between US-30 and FM 665 outside town limits
Prichard was founded in 1824 by John Prichard and his wife, Martha. The first post office in the town was established in 1832. In 1881, Prichard had a population of 350 people. By 1907, the population had grown to 1,200 people. In 1925, the town plat was created and it included a square block with a bronze statue of Caroline Pratt Prichard as its centerpiece. This square block served as the meeting place for all civic activities until 1952 when their building burned down.
