He used it to shoot nails out of wood using his shotgun as a hammer. This made him the first person to use a gun hammer as an agricultural tool! In 1911, Simeon Griffey built a gunsmith shop in Prichard and started making hammers for shotguns and other firearms. He began selling his hammers at fairs and exhibitions around town. Prichard is a town in Marshall County, Alabama, United States. The population was 706 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Montgomery Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in this area were Methodists who came from Tennessee in 1827. They named their community Prichard after Rev. John Prichard, an assistant pastor at a Methodist church near Chattanooga. The first post office was opened in 1836 and became known as "Pritchard." In 1868, the name was changed to "Marshall". In 1907, it reverted to its original name of "Prichard." In 1930, a dam was built on the Mobile River and began releasing water into Prichard Creek which formed Lake Pritchard. That same year, a new elementary school and high school were built on Main Street by the Marshall County Board of Education. The primary purpose for these buildings was to serve students from Prichard until they could be sent to other schools in Marshall County or Mobile County. The old high school building remained standing until it was razed in 1967 and replaced by another building that still stands today; this building served as the town hall until 1984 when it burned down again and has not been rebuilt since. The main industries in Prichard are agriculture (poultry)and small-scale manufacturing such as fabrication of carpets and furniture from local materials or making candy from sugarcane juice concentrate

The post office was established at Prichard on October 15, 1851, survive until February 13th 1895 when it closed due to lack of mail service from Mobile Bay In 1861, during the American Civil War, Confederate forces unsuccessfully attempted to take over Prichard while Union forces held back their advance. A monument to General John Crain stands outside of town today commemorating this event. After the war ended, many soldiers came home and started families in PrICHARD; however many also decided to stay for Reconstruction which lasted until1877. Many businesses were established during Reconstruction including J D's grocery store (now known as Walmart), Armstrong Hardware Company (now Armstrong Heating & Cooling), First National Bank (now Wells Fargo) and two cotton ginners - Blacksmith Shop #1 & 2. The first African American resident of PrICHARD was James Campbelle who arrived on December 3rd 1865. Mr Campbelle operated a sawmill and later became headmaster at Goode Schooluntil his death on October 31st 1902.
