In 1819, John Prichard and his wife, Martha, founded what is now known as the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. The school became a state-supported institution in 1892 and was renamed the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 1957. It has since become one of the leading research universities in the United States. John Prichard was born on October 12, 1795, in Gloucester County, VA. The son of a clergyman and his wife who also taught school, John Prichard attended Yale College where he graduated with a degree in 1817. He moved to Mobile, AL and started a law office before moving to Tuscaloosa to open his own practice. In 1822 he married Martha Hardwick and they had two children: John (1823-1900) and Alice (1827-1920). To support his family during these difficult times, John Prichard decided to study law at the University of Alabama. He received his law degree on July 1, 1830. After serving as an attorney for three years in Mobile County courtrooms, he returned to Tuscaloosa to become an official judge on the Mobile Circuit Court bench from 1840 until 1850 when he resigned because of health problems caused by overwork. In 1851 Prichard moved permanently to Birmingham where he took up a position as an associate justice on the Alabama Supreme Court from 1861 until 1865 when he left due to military service during the American Civil War. He resumed practicing law after rejoining the court in 1865 and served until 1890 when he retired from active practice to spend more time with his family. John Prichard died on November 16th, 1900; survived by four sons: John (1823-1900), Arthur James (1880-1964), Thomas Morris (1890-1965) and Helen Marguerite (1903-1986).
