Prichard, Alabama is a small town located in Mobile County, Alabama. The population was 5,802 as of the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Mobile County. The name "Prichard" is derived from an early settler named Pierre who founded the community in 1827. The first post office in Prichard was established in 1829. In 1834, the townsite of Prichard was organized and began to grow rapidly with residents coming from all over Mobile County and even neighboring Jefferson County for work on what would become one of the largest cotton plantations in Georgia. In 1857, John Sledge settled near present-day Prichard and built a house which remains standing today as one of the oldest buildings in town. Sledge became known for his marketing skills which helped make Prichard one of the most prospering communities inMobile County during this time period. During World War II, many factories were set up within walking distance of Prichard thanks to its location at the intersection of two major transportation arteries - Uptown Mobile and Montgomery Street - giving it access to both military production plants and marketplaces alike. After V-E Day, soldiers returning home brought back tales of exciting wartime adventures that abound around every corner here at home – including off-the-grid drinking contests on horseback or snowmobiling down nearby mountain ranges (something few people did then). Prichard is a small town in Alabama, United States. The population was 1,334 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Decatur, Alabama Micropolitan Statistical Area. The history of Prichard can be traced back to 1871 when James Fenton and his family moved from Mobile, Alabama to start a cotton plantation in what is now Prichard. In 1905, the town had a population of only sixty-four people and was known as an agricultural center. However, by the early 21st century, Prichard had grown into a small community with over 1,000 residents. One of the most significant events in Prichard's history occurred on November 6th, 1938 when Pee Wee Reese made his television debut on "The Lloyd Webber Show". This event helped bring new life to the town and has been cited as one of its most important accomplishments. Today, Prichard remains an active community with many businesses and organizations that contribute to its unique culture and spirit. Its economy is based primarily on farming and ranching activities which continue to play an important role in its economy today.
In 1819, John Prichard settled in Alabama and opened a store in Auburn. He was the first white person to own land in what is now Alabama. In 1828, he homesteaded land in Mobile County and started a store there. In 1830, he built a cotton gin on his farm at Cahaba River. The following year, he married Lucy Blackburn and started a cotton plantation near present day Decatur. They had four children: John P., Lucy M., Sarah C., and James W.. John P. Prichard served as mayor of Birmingham from 1847 to 1850; state senator from Alabama from 1852 to 1856; Ulysses S. Grant's Secretary of War from 1865 to1869; and governor of Alabama from 1870 to 1872. Lucy Blackburn Prichard was a suffragist who worked for women's rights until her death in 1895.
