It is now a small city located in south-central Alabama. George Washington Prichard was born on December 12, 1784, in what is today West Virginia. He migrated to what is now Montgomery County, Alabama, in 1819 with his family after being given citizenship by President James K. Polk as part of the Compromise of 1850. After working several jobs for years to save money for the move, the Prichards landed in Prattville (now known as Birmingham) where they soon began to build their home and provide for their six children. By 1830 they had five more children and were able to sell their home and start anew. In 1831 George Washington Prichard married Sarah Jane Cobb - daughter of John Cobb of Madison County, Alabama - who would become an important figure in Birmingham's history. They would have four more children before Sarah Jane died young from tuberculosis on February 5th, 1863 at the age of 43 years old; her husband followed her into death two weeks later at the age of 54 years old. Over time Prattville grew increasingly Republican due to its close proximity to Mobile Bayou which aided cotton plantations during Reconstruction Era times when blacks were prohibited from owning land or participating politically without special permission from white authorities. This political animosity led directly to much violence throughout Selma and other black communities across central Alabama during this time period as African Americans tried unsuccessfully (and often violently) to demand equal rights under America's new system of government that had been created specifically for them through Reconstruction efforts spearheaded by Ulysses S Grant's administration. ThePrattville Massacre occurred on November 1st 1865 when Confederate soldiers killed eight African American women and children while searching for Union sympathizers near their house on Commerce Street just outside town limits; this event is memorialized annually by "Bloody Sunday," which refers to November 5th anniversary of that day when up to 50 peaceful protesters were killed by Confederate soldiers at Tuscaloosa courthouse following a march there seeking freedom for all Southern black citizens living within Union lines..
