The first courthouse was built in 1871 and served as the court house until it burned down in 1925. After graduating from college, he returned to his home country and began farming. In 1870, he married Anna Maria Randolph and together they founded a farm named Randolph Station. The couple quickly developed an impressive career as farmers and ranchers. They also served as county judges for several years before retiring in 1932. Alfred Prichard is well-known for his contributions to Alabama culture and history. He is buried at Arlington Cemetery outside Washington D.C., where he is considered one of the state's most important citizens. His legacy includes many notable accomplishments including developingAlabama's economy; creating thousands of jobs across the state; helping to lay the groundwork for both civil rights and women's rights; and leading efforts to create statewide education programs.

The first white settlers in Prichard were the Applegate brothers. The land was purchased by Captain James Manning from the Creek nation in 1819. The town was founded in 1821, when a post office and tavern were established at the river crossing. By 1830, Prichard had a population of twenty-five inhabitants. A large sawmill was built in 1832 and continued operation until1853. In 1842, John Fenton leased 4,000 acres of land north of Prichard to developers who named it "Fenton's Valley". In 1860, General J C Pickens erected a military depot on the east bank of the Chattahoochee River near present day Decatur. This depot served as an important supply point for Confederate forces during the American Civil War. During Reconstruction in Alabama, many African Americans worked as sharecroppers or growers along with whites in Prichard and its vicinity. Many black men were drafted into the Union army during World War II because of push factors such as black unemployment rates which skyrocketed after reconstruction ended
