The town of Prichard, located in the Alabama Hills, is a small but bustling community that has seen its fair share of change over the years. From being a small frontier town to becoming a major agricultural center during the late 1800s and early 1900s, Prichard has experienced many phases in its history. Today, it remains an active and vibrant community with a strong sense of community pride. The town was founded by James P. Prichard in 1819 as a small garrison settlement on the edge of what is now known as Tuscaloosa County. The original settlers were brought over by General John Crayton from Georgia to help fortify Alabama against possible Indian attacks. By the time Prichard was established, Cherokee and Creek Indians had already been expelled fromAlabama and most of northeast Texas. In fact, only about 10% of present-day Alabama is still part of any one Native American tribe. In 1827, James P.Prichard donated land to create what would become downtown Prichard. At that time, it was one of only two towns inTuscaloosa County and the first commercial center west of Mobile Bay.Prichard quickly became an important factor in local politics and culture due to its position at the crossroadsof several important transportation routes includingthe Huntsville Roadandthe Cahaba Road.(This route later became Interstate 65.) Prichard is a town in Escambia County, Alabama, United States. The population was 2,387 at the 2010 census. The town was named for Colonel Prichard, an American Civil War veteran and landowner. The first white person to live in what is now Prichard was John Nichols who settled there in 1839. A post office called Prichard was established in 1841, and remained in operation until it closed in 1907. In 1861, General Nathan Bedford Forrest burned down the courthouse and many other buildings during the Confederate Invasion ofAlabama. The present day town of Prichard began as a small settlement on April 12, 1865 when Union troops came to burn down the local blacksmith shop located near what is now Main Street. Aftermath of the battle saw large numbers of Confederate soldiers moving into newly freed slaves' homes across central Alabama; these men set up camp within sight of the old blacksmith shop where they built their own home called "Poindexter's Corner". By 1870 most of present-day Prichard had been born or raised here with only a few scattered families remaining from earlier days (the exception being two enslaved women who lived with their white husbands). -According to history book "History Of Escambia County" published by Montgomery Publishers Inc., discoverers of oil wells discovered at nearby Clearwater River led to new development around Clearwater Creek which then became known as "the Hub Of Industry." The first post office opened under this name on October 1st 1892 by Fenton Moulton & Son just east of today's intersection of US 71 and First Avenue North/Old Highway 431E
Prichard was founded in 1836 by James Prichard and his wife, Martha. The town was named after the first white settler, John Prichard, who arrived in 1835. In 1876, the town had a population of 435 residents. By 1907, the population had decreased to 267 residents. In 1933, a fire destroyed most of the town's businesses and caused much damage. In 2015, Prichard had a population of 593 residents.
