The Prattville Observatory was built in 1892 and served as a research center for the University of Alabama until it closed in 1955. It is now a museum. The first scopes in Prattville were made by Harlow Shapley and his son, John Shapley. John Shapley was also the founder of the American Astronomical Society. The original building on campus was replaced by the current structure in 1905. The original building still stands and is open to the public. The University of Alabama purchased the observatory from Prattville Academy in 1955 and operated it as their own research center until it closed down in 1960. It then became part of the Alabama National Laboratory where it remains today as a museum. Prattville is an agricultural community, with many small-scale businesses and farms dotting its landscape. The town's namesake, George Pratt, founded Pratt County in 1825. In 1907, the first post office in Prattville was opened. Today, the village has a population of just over 100 people. The history of Prattville can be traced back to 1825 when George Pratt founded Pratt County in what is now Montgomery County. It was named for John Prentice who had settled near present-day Prattville in 1786. At that timeAlabama was part of the Creek Nation and there were no white settlers within striking distance of Creek towns such as Mound City or Tuscaloosa. In 1907, after Alabama gained statehood, the first post office in Prattville opened with Samuel Soddy as its officer. The village grew rapidly during World War II due to its proximity to military bases and civilian employment opportunities at nearby Fort McClellan and Fort Knox barracks. However, following the war, military activity decreased and growth slowed until the early 1960s when new development began centering around downtown Prattville and newly constructed housing developments on Roundabout Road west of town center. Today, much of what made up old Downtown Prattville have been replaced by new buildings including two hotels (the Patton Place Resort & Spa and Holiday Inn Express), a large shopping mall (Walmart), several restaurants/cafes/bars/, two churches (St James Episcopal Church & Baptist First Baptist Church) as well as numerous smaller businesses catering to all types of shoppers from farmers Markets to department stores. Prattville's unique character cannot be overemphasized - it is an unassuming little community that remains largely self-sufficient despite being situated close to major metropolitan areas such as Birmingham and Mobile Bay Area cities.. In fact, one recent report estimated that only 2% of all commerce conducted within city limits takes place within 50 feet of any business owned or operated by citizens thereof!

Prattville is home to two schools - Prattville High School and Prattville Middle School. The post office has been in operation since 1892. The first settlers of Prattville were James and Martha Crouse who immigrated from Scotland in 1807. They built a cabin near what is now known as Main Street and started trading with Indians for goods they could not bring with them back to their homeland. James died young on his farm in 1812, leaving Martha to operate the farm alone until her death in 1815 aged 44 years old. In 1821 John Dickson bought the farm from Martha Crouse and began farming it himself with help from his son Marshall Dickson and grandson John Dickson Jr., also known as "Jed." Over time, other farmers joined Jed's team including Wm Hargrave (1824-1910), Sam Houston (1825-1912), Andrew Gregg (1829-1900) and Jesse Ladd (1832-1914). In 1865 the entire town was surveyed by Colonel Jno Ewing who named it Prattvill
Prattville was first settled in 1827 by John Pratt, a Quaker. The town prospered as a cotton and textile center until the 1930s, when the industry declined and poverty increased. In the 1940s, Prattville became an agricultural community with small-scale production of crops and livestock. By 1970, however, Prattville had lost its identity as a cotton town to new development in nearby Vestavia Hills.
