Prattville is a small town in the U.S. state of Alabama, located on the east bank of thealachia River. The population was 1,912 at the 2010 census. It is part of Mobile County and is surrounded by Baldwin County to the north, Escambia County to the west and Putnam County to the south. Prattville is named for John Pratt, a member of Congress from Virginia in 1824-25 and 1830-31 and again from 1833-34. The post office was established at Prattville in 1822, and has been in operation since that time. The first settler in Prattville was David Capps who arrived there in 1827. He built a cabin on what is now Old Highway 9 near present day intersection of Business US 301/State Road 211 (now US 231) and Old Highway 6 (now State Road 213). Capps remained here until his death in 1840. His son George Capps moved his family to what is now Baldwin County also around this time. George had two sons: James A., born about 1830, who settled near present day White Hall on Mobile Bayou; and Elisha W., born about 1835, who settled near modern day Escambia City along Alabama Railroad line.. In 1837 Isaac Stout moved from Tennessee to what is now Baldwin County with his wife Lucy Stout as their only inhabitant (). In 1840 he married Anna Maria Dovey at an unknown location northeast of where he had settled earlier that year (). Some sources say Anna Maria Dovey was from Athensburg Kentucky but her parents were natives of Cherry Hill New Jersey which would make her much younger than Isaac Stout - she must have been quite some years old when she married him so this could not be true(). They may have raised their children here before moving backpacking across America sometime between 1840-1845 or they may have come directly from Tennessee which would make them more likely candidates for settlement hereabouts given their lack of resources within those counties at that time ().Both Anna Maria Dovey's father Troy Hinton () & mother Rebecca Stroud () lived close by & it seems likely they too helped contribute to early settlers life hereabouts including providing both subsistence farming skills & shelter while they awaited better opportunities elsewhere back home (); both women are buried nearby along with other early settlers such as husbandman Samuel Morse (), blacksmiths Daniel Webster (), Joel Knapp (), Amos Nevins () & others . After Norway’s Invasion during American Civil War AnnaMaria Dovey bore 3 children @ 2 different locations after fleeing war zone: Solomon Molineux Born about 1865 Near Elmira NY Died 1865 off Iuka TN December 16th ; Martha Jane Born about 1870 –> Unknown died young; Infant mortality rates high then especially among frontier farmers like these so childbearing must have been very difficult without medical help or support etcetera AnnaMaria Dovey eventually remarried(?) John Smeaton around 1850/51 living just outside modern day Auburn AL but it's uncertain if this marriage actually happened or if this information comes solely from later sources; John Smeaton did live briefly near Auburn before moving away circa 1860 however he does not seem possible to be either one specific person or actually related historically thereto Although AnnaMaria Dovey initially mentioned above does appear below as being possibly related through marriage (& thus ancestors), further research suggests otherwise .. Perhaps we should call her "Johnna" instead? Anyway... mystery solved! The next settler arriving here around 1800 was Capt Samuel Morse who came via boat down Mobile Bayou from Tennessee looking for land grants himself (). He soon found success cultivating land surrounding today's town limits - intermingling with local African Americans working alongside them - giving rise to occasional tensions but overall healthy relations.(*) One particular incident involving slaves occurred when Capt Morse ordered one group of slaves working on his farm scourging another group with pitchforks because they were caught stealing corn .) By 1800 most residents had arrived either through traveling or taking up residence locally following successful efforts by Governor Tryon towards territorial expansion into new areas southward including Cookefield Hundred (Alabama), Creek Nation (Oklahoma) & many others(*). Although people originally traveled considerable distances simply for agricultural reasons various entrepreneur types gradually started developingrous Iron mines throughout Northeast Alabama starting primarily due largely to resourcefulness thereof ;) [*]. initial production turned out very poor quality due largely to low temperature unsuitable ore mined so efforts were made thereafter toward better methodsologies beginning shortly thereafter (& iron production began steady increasing thereafter*). Coal mining followed shortly afterwards becoming increasingly important due alloys produced could be cast into cannons etc.; however slag created during smelting process caused dangerous levels of pollution which required incessant maintenance even up until recently :((*)(*) See map below for more detail .) However, economic decline began to take hold in the 1930s and early 1940s as mills closed down or were sold off to other businesses. In 1951, the Community Development Authority was created to help improve living conditions in Prattville through such things as land acquisition and infrastructure projects. However, this effort failed to make much difference as joblessness increased throughout the later decades of that decade. In 2007, however, efforts began anew within the community to revive its economy through developing new businesses and increasing cultural offerings. Today, Prattville is an active local community that still enjoys high levels of culture and commerce despite its struggling economy
