The Prattville Gun Club was founded in 1892. It was the first rifle club in Alabama. The club is still in existence and operates out of the old post office building on Elm Street. The gun club meets every other month to shoot target pistols and rifles. In 1911, the Prattville Rifle Club adopted a resolution that required all members to wear eye protection while shooting at targets. This policy was changed in 1917 when it became mandatory for all shooters to wear face masks while shooting at rifled targets. In 1924, primary responsibility for maintaining safe gun handling passed from the NRA to the Prattville Rifle Club which continues to manage this duty today. Prattville is a city in Etowah County, Alabama, United States. It was founded in 1875 by General John C. Pratt and his family. The population was 17,711 at the 2010 census. The city is the county seat of Etowah County. Prattville was founded on December 12, 1875 by General John C. Pratt and his wife, Nellie Bledsoe Pratt. At that time the area lying east of Mobile Bay was included in Etowah County and had no municipal government other than scattered hamlets known as "villages." The townsite chosen for Prattville lay just south of what is now Mound Road (now US-280), at an intersection then known as Big Shoals Creek Road and State Route 434 (now US-29). There were several small settlements located around this location before it came to be called "Prattville" on October 20, 1876 by order of the Alabama Legislature through the influence of Judge Prentice Morton who served as its first Mayor. The original town site contained but did not include present day downtown Prattville which was added later when land was donated from a railroad right-of-way running through what is now downtown Chattanooga, Tennessee which had been abandoned by the railroad company after it built its own station there. The name change from "Village" to "City" happened because City Hall stood on Brush Street near present day Fourth Avenue SW in Downtown Chattanooga prior to moving to its current location in 1907 across Third Avenue SE two years later when that portion of Chattanoogan Boulevard became part of city limits with adjacent areas annexed into Chattanooga proper hydraulically during a process known as annexation or consolidation without reference to vote or lawmaking either by legislative body or citizens acting together under direction of civic leaders then existing within those boundaries - something that continues today with similar results albeit through different channels). In 1918 Union Station burned down rendering moot any attempt at reopening it following remarks made by Governor John Connally about Congress' inability anymore properly attend to pressing state issues since they had moved their capital from Montgomery Place near Lexington Park southeastward along I-565 eastward into Nashville whereupon Connally declared bankruptcy allowing Mobil Oil Company to build an oil refinery thereon - all within Cobb County making Atlanta becoming so large faster than any other American city even though Birmingham remained much larger due primarily to its coal industry whose production continued unabated well beyond World War II notwithstanding occasional local protests until finally being destroyed utterly during Hurricane Katrina less than one year later having lost over 50% of its acreage including most if not all its jobs capacity thereby taking with it more than 1/3rds of its entire workforce although many able TO RETURN resumed work post Katrina such efforts have yet again failed despite massive phone calls and social media campaigns plus billions available currently for cleanup) .
