Prattville is a small town in Butler County, Alabama, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Huntsville–Decatur metropolitan area. The first people to arrive in Prattville were three families that owned land along the creek that served as their principal means of transportation and trade. They built log cabins, located north of what is now Main Street on a bluff overlooking the creek. By 1825, John Pratt (a native of Pennsylvania) had come to live in Prattville and began to build houses here. He became one of the early settlers and was elected justice of the peace for Butler County in 1829. In 1836 he married Sarah Whitefield (née Gadsden). In 1840 Joseph Blackburn bought two lots from John Pratt for $300 cash and started construction on what would become Blackburn's Store. His store operated from about 1840 until it burned down in 1865. The first school in Prattville was built on land donated by Mrs. Cate Gadsden about 1845; it was called "The School House" until moved to its present location near Court Square in 1861 when additions were made to it. A post office called "Betts' Mill" was established at Prattville in 1850, but discontinued operation due to lack of mail service there; it re-opened under new name "Prairie View" on July 8, 1865 after Prairie View Academy opened nearby with classes starting August 24th strapdgeing day! In 1870 Isaac Witherspoon founded Witherspoon's grocery store here which continued operations until around 1919 when it closed because of World War I shortages during which time most everyday items such as milk were not available outside the state lines like they are now! AfterWitherspoons store closed local farmers started selling eggs out of their hives directly from their homes so this spot today known as "Egg Hill" became home to many farms producing eggs beginning with Hensley & Sons who ran an egg carton factory from 1927 until 1978!!!!!

Prattville was founded in 1819 by James Pratt and his brother John. The town was named after General George Washington, who had been its first mayor. It grew rapidly during the early 1800s, becoming one of the most important trading towns in the region. By 1830, Prattville had a population of over 1,500 people. In 1833, George W. Jones moved to Prattville from Macon, Alabama and became its first Mayor. The town continued to grow throughout the 19th century and by 1910 it had a population of nearly 10,000 people. During World War II, Prattville played an important role as a munitions production center for the US military. After the war, it experienced growth again until it reached its current size in 2000. Prattville is located on Hwy 141 about 25 miles east of Birmingham and 60 miles west of Mobile Bayou. It is bordered on the north by Huffman City (population 910), on the south by Hoover County (population 3,337), on the west by Prichard City (population 2,967), and on the east by Alma City (population 753). The downtown area includes brick buildings dating back to 1829-1830 and two cotton warehouses that were built in 1915-1916. A number of small businesses have also been built in recent years within walking distance of city hall and other popular tourist destinations such as Independence Hall National Historical Park and Lookout Mountain Railroad Museum headquarters (both open daily 9am-5pm; free admission). The history of Prattville began with James Pratt Sr., who immigrated from Scotland in 1795. He worked his way up through local jobs before starting his own business in HuntsVILLE in 1819: JAMES PRATT & CO Refrigerator Makers [now known as HDG Refrigeration]. In 1830 he relocated to Prattville with his family consisting of nine children: four daughters – Sarah Jane (baptized March 12th 1796 at age 15; ddsFebruary 2nd 1863 ), Margaret “Maggie” Elizabeth (baptized November 22nd 1800 at age 8; ddsApril 5th 1840 ), Anna Susannah “Nancy” Jane(baptized October 11th 1802 at age 6; ddsJanuary 4th 1865 ), Martha Ann(baptized December 14th 1807 at age 2; ddsMay 20th 1861 ), James William Jr.(baptized January 23rd 1809 at age 1) – all born between 1801-1803 when he started working for his father’s business full time! His older brothers John Thomas Sr., Andrew Joseph Sr., Job Lewis Jr., William Samuel Jr.– all started their own businesses soon thereafter!
