Prattville is a small town in Baldwin County, Alabama. The population was 1,142 at the 2000 census. It is the only community in Baldwin County with a post office that remains open regular hours. The first settler in Prattville was Dr. John Prentice and his family who arrived in 1819 from England. In 1827, Andrew Johnson's father, James Ketchum Johnson, bought land here and founded the village of Ketchum Village which later became Prattville. In 1875, J C Pratt opened the first sawmill in Prattville and became its namesake. He also built a white schoolhouse and laid out streets for the town which are now known as Prattsville Avenue, High Street, and Main Street. The original post office was established at Prattsville on April 6th, 1886 by F L Sprague with Wm H Chambers as first mail carrier. The present Post Office building was erected in 1908 on what is now Court Square Drive next to Sprague Elementary School. Mrs Sprague donated this property to the city of Prattville for use as an elementary school extension field!
