The community was named after Hiram Pratt, who founded Pratt's line of grocery stores in 1892. The first store in Prattville was opened by Hiram Pratt and his brother Isaac on Main Street in 1892. By 1915, there were six stores operating in Prattville. The Grocery Store Company became part of J.C. Penney Corporation in 1945 and closed its doors in 1990. Today, the only remaining business is a gas station which serves as the town's only source of food for locals and tourists alike. During World War II, Prattville saw increased activity due to military exercises conducted there by USArmy units stationed in southern Alabama. This led to new development along Railroad Avenue – today’s main street – which includes many businesses and homes dating from this time period such as the Rendezvous Restaurant & Lounge (now known as Lighthouse Tavern), The Bluegrass Grill & Saloon (now called Captain Jacks), and Stonington Hall espionage bunker (later used as a movie set for “Eisenhower”). Despite these positive developments over recent decades, some aspects of Prattvillians' lives continue To experience challenges that are unique unto them within their community."

In 1836, a group of men from Alabama named James Spriggs bought land in what is now Prattville and started to grow crops.
