The first school building was erected in 1861; it served as the county courthouse until 1928 when it was moved to its current location across from First Baptist Church. During World War II (1939-1945), Prattville played an important role as one of two military airfields within Beech County open to all citizens for use by both America'sAAF/USAAF bombers and RAF fighter-bombers flying missions over Germany during that war. A large hangar accommodating twenty bomber aircraft stood near downtown while other buildings housed various aviationrelated activities including manufacturing plants for airplanes parts and products used by American aerospace manufacturers at that time such as Boeing & Lockheed Aircraft Corporation; Grumman Aviation Division; McDonnell Douglas Aircraft Company; Convair Aircraft Corporation etc.; many of which are still standing today including Pritchard Air Force Base which houses USAF's Fifth Air Force Headquarters responsible for nuclear deterrence operations worldwide) A major addition to downtown Prattville during this time were new shopping malls built adjacent to First Baptist Church with anchor stores like Sears Roebuck & Co., JCPenney Inc., Macy's Inc., Kmart Inc., HEB Corp., Dunkin' Donuts Corp.; Sleepy Hollow Mall opened adjacent to Decatur High School approximately one mile east of downtown annexation Bridgeport Plaza Shopping Center opened approximately one mile west of downtown annexation also serving as an anchor store like Sears Roebuck & Co.; JCPenney Inc.; Macy'sincorporated;; HEB corp;; Dunkin' Donuts Corp;; respectively

Many notable people have been associated with Coker's Mill including Congressman Leroy Shuler (D-Ala.), Governor George Wallace (R- Ala.), author Toni Morrison (JANE), and CEO Bob Iger of Pixar Animation Studios Inc.. Prattville experienced some dramatic changes during World War II when many residents enlisted or served in the military as defense workers or those who made food for troops stationed nearby at Fort Pickett near Decatur or other locations acrossAlabama After World War II ended, many jobs left Prattville as manufacturinghey moved out to larger cities such as Birmingham and HuntsVILLE while service jobs replaced traditional manufacturing with new technologies like plastics and electronic components
The first white settlers in Prattville were James and Nancy Elmore, who came in 1827. The town was named for General George Washington Pratt, the father of Orion Pratt, one of the founders of Alabama. The town was founded on a tract of land that had been given to them by Governor John Cullman. It was not until 1830 that the first school was opened in the town. In 1868, Prattville incorporated as a city and began to grow rapidly with its new businesses and population. By 1900, it had a population of over 100 people and boasted several prestigious businesses including the Pratt Building which still stands today.
