Prattville is a small town located in Butler County, Alabama, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Huntsville-Decatur, Alabama Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded by George Pratt in 1872. He moved to the area from Mobile and built a log cabin on his land which still stands today. The first school in Prattville was built in 1876 and the first post office was established in 1878. The population of Prattville increased rapidly during the early years of its existence due to its location along the railroad and its easy access to hunt and fish. Many businesses were established in Prattville during this time including a grocery store, millinery store, lumberyard, blacksmith shop and gristmill. In 1924, a new roundabout was constructed on Farm Road 7 near present day Prattville Center and named after George Pratt himself. This addition greatly facilitated transportation within the community as well as added much needed commercial space for both local businesses and neighboring communities such as Decatur and Huntsville. In 1970, Interstate 65 became operational within Alabama causing serious problems for rural communities such as Prattville which depended on truck traffic to function properly. To help meet these challenges, an agreement was reached between state officials and local leaders that created the Rural Transportation Authority which provided subsidized truck transportation to many villages throughout Butler County for local residents who could not afford or did not have access to cars or other forms of transportation

By 1826, the population had reached 1,000 people and it became an agricultural center with factories to produce cottonseed oil, flour, hay, oats and other goods. In 1861, when Confederate troops invaded Alabama, Prattville sided with the Unionists and remained loyal to the Confederacy. After the war ended in 1865, most residents left for various reasons including Reconstructionism in Mississippi and Radical Reconstructionism in Alabama which led to economic decline throughout much ofAlabama until recently. In 1870s– 1880s also saw growth due to railroads coming through town bringing new jobs into town such as engineering services for railroad tracks and later pulp mills that produced paper products such as newsprint, billboards etc.. However during this time there was no real housing development or infrastructure put into place to support these businesses so many towns like Prattville experienced rapid declines in population over time leading to loss of jobs opportunities along with increased crime rates which negatively impacted community stability overall. However recent efforts by Mayor Pro Tem Darrell Issa (R) have seen some activity take place within the city limits including renovating abandoned buildings within city limits along with initiating development projects within limited areas adjacent to those areasVISTA is currently working towards revitalizing both parts of Prattsvilie while growing access to healthy foods options outside of downtown thereby creating more socio-economic redevelopment opportunities within city limits."

In 1827, the town passed through a process known as "extirpation," during which all Native Americans living within its boundaries were driven out. The town's growth was later slowed by natural disasters such as flooding and fires. In 1861, after Confederate forces invaded Alabama, Prattville sided with the Confederacy and lost its status as a market center. However, the community continued to grow until it reached its peak in the early 1920s.
