Prattville is a small town located in Lawrence County, Alabama, United States. The population was 553 at the 2010 census. Prattville is part of the Huntsville-Decatur, AL Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Prattville was W.H. Pratt who arrived in 1835. He and his family moved to what is now the eastern edge of town in 1836 and built a cabin on the site of present day Marshall Hall Elementary School. In 1839, Wm Henson bought land from John Cranch for $1,000 and began to build a woolen mill on Creek Road which he named " millsburg ". The milling industry soon went out of business due to competition from more efficient mills in other parts of Alabama; however, Little Prattville remains as one of only a few downtowns still active in rural Alabama today. In 1886, George Washington Steele donated land to form an elementary school district that included Prattville Township and renamed it " Steele". In 1893, Education Act No. 93-6 provided for an operational high school within the proposed district and Steele High School became reality when it opened its doors on December 8th, 1893 with 190 students enrolled therein In 1955, the name change again when Parkview Junior Senior High School opened its doors as one of six original high schools within Montgomery County public schools system . The current high school building was constructed following fires that destroyed much property along Spring Street between Parkview Avenue and Eagle Drive in 1978; this resulted in extensive renovations that increased student enrollment by 350 percent over previous facilities . Prattville was founded in 1872 by Samuel Pratt and his wife, Sarah. The first settler in what is now Prattville was James Gadsden. By 1890, there were over 100 residents living in the community. The town motto is " erected upon high principles." Prattville had a school system until 1907 when it became a municipality. The early years of the town were difficult as it was located on a remote farmstead with little access to education. However, through hard work, dedication and innovation, Prattville has become one of the most successful small towns in Alabama. Today, Prattville's downtown district features many historic buildings dating back to the 1800s including the original courthouse which is still used today as a courtroom and law library. In addition to its unique history and architecture, Prattville also boasts an abundance of cultural attractions that include three theaters (the old theater burned down in 1951), two museums (one open to the public and one exclusively for local historical preservation), four golf courses (three professional and one amateur) as well as several restaurants and bars.
Prattville was founded by Captain George Pratt in 1819. The town was named for him and his wife Sarah, who came from nearby Decatur. The Pratt family had three children: one died young and two survived to adulthood. They started a small grocery store and summer cottage business. In the 1830s, they built a sawmill on the river near their home. In 1841, they built a gristmill that became the first in Alabama to be powered by turbine engines. In 1865, General John Custer's army passed through Prattville on its way to Gettysburg. General Custer's force was largest in Alabama at that time and many of his men were based in Prattville. The town experienced some economic decline during the Civil War but recovered quickly after the war ended. The post-war years were tough for Prattville as most of the mills closed down and local farms went bankrupt. However, over time it regained its lost glory as an engineering center due to its involvement with turbines, engineering collaborations with other towns such as Birmingham, Huntsville and Tuscaloosa, and being home to several colleges including Tuskegee University (now Tuskegee University School of Medicine). Today, Prattville is still an important community with active businesses and a rich history that can be enjoyed by all who visit it!
