After years of debate over annexation proposals from both cities, Montgomery merged with Birmingham to form the Alabama City–Birmingham Combined Statistical Area in 1971. In recent decades, Prattville has experienced significant growth due to its proximity to two large metropolitan areas – Birmingham and Tuscaloosa – as well as its status as an agricultural center for central Alabama. The town's economy depends heavily on agriculture and manufacturing; however, some industries that have had a major impact on the local economy include electrical equipment manufacturing (Holt-Crosby), papermaking (Barracks Paper Company), vehicle production (Chrysler Corp.), and new construction (Fowler-Merrill). A number of unique features make Prattville stand out from other small towns in central Alabama: its wide variety of housing types – including single-family homes, multifamily dwellings, mobile homes, barracks buildings/homeschooling facilities and group homes – as well as its location atop rolling hills overlooking downtown Montgomery; its close connection to various public services through streets named after county officials or mayors who played important roles in early development; and its long history of support for arts + culture events including music festivals throughout the year as well as annual bluegrass & acoustic concerts at Harringay Park amphitheater.

Prattville was founded in 1837 by George Pratt and his family. The first post office in Prattville was established on April 25, 1837. The name of the town originates from General George Pratt who settled there in 1837 with his family. The post office was renamed to Prattville on November 3, 1853 after Colonel Nathan Pratt (1792-1868), father of Senator Charles W. Pratt (1859-1948). In 1907, the courthouse and jail were built and dedicated by Governor John Fenton Payne Jr.. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all land. As of the census of 2010, there were 1,572 people residing in town. Of these people, 526 (27%) were African American; 332 (12%) were white; 132 (6%) were Hispanic or Latino; and 32 (1%)were Asian or Pacific Islander
Prattville was founded in 1819 by John Pratt and his wife, Harriett. The town became an important center for cotton production in the antebellum period. In 1860, it was sacked by Confederate forces during the Alabama Civil War.
