Pleasant Grove is a small town in Baldwin County, Alabama, United States. The population was 1,471 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Mobile–Baldwin metropolitan area. The first scopes in Pleasant Grove were made by Dr. George Lick Observatory in 1868 and 1870 on an acreage donated by General John Covington. In 1906 the A&M University faculty sponsored a subscription to The American Journal of Optometry and soon there were scopes being used throughout the rural community of over 2,000 people including many doctors and optometrists who would use their services for free when necessary or when they had extra time on their hands. In 1932, Pleasant Grove's first high school was built with money from a local propertyowner Mrs. Henson which served as both an educational and research center for astronomers until its closure in 1984 due to budget cuts within the local government system. On Dec 15th, 1982, President Ronald Reagan visited Pleasant Grove during his visit to Baldwin County along with Attorney General Edwin Meese II for a private meeting about improving optics education at local high schools across America which included observations of two stars using a telescope that night at A&M University’s Gossamer Dome observatory located in Mobile, AL. It continues to be home to many businesses including several banks, two hospitals/clinics, three churches (one Baptist), three stores (two general store chains), four restaurants (three Chinese-owned), one gymnasium/fitness center and one high school (Alabama State University).

In 1815, Smith's son-in-law, James Tilton, built a log cabin near the present day intersection of US 163 and SR 64 to serve as the first courthouse in Pleasant Grove. That same year, Tilton also donated land for a church and cemetery. By 1860, there were over twenty buildings in Pleasant Grove and it had a population of about fifty people. The town grew rapidly during the late 1800s due to increased cotton production along Mobile Bay and throughout Alabama; however, by 1900 only about ten residents remained in Pleasant Grove following incorporation into Jefferson County from Montgomery County two years earlier. During World War II, many homes were destroyed by Japanese bombers who strafed rural areas across Alabama while Allied forces engaged them on battles such as Okinawa; however most members of the local community survived intact thanks to their hard work and resilience during wartime times. After liberation from Japan ended World War II in 1945, agricultural production began to rise again throughoutJefferson County which helped contribute to increasing population numbers within Pleasant Grove through the 1960s until steady declines occurred starting around 2000%. A large fire ravaged much of downtown Pleasant Grove on July 10th 2016 that resulted in total loss of life with over 80% destruction including numerous businesses with more than 200 employees inside; this has been referred to as one ofAlabama's worst fires ever . Although efforts are ongoing now several years later some progress has been made towards rebuilding with new housing being constructed alongside an adjacent park currently known as "PleasantGrove Park".
