The ordinance defined "white" as one who could speak English fluently and "colored" as any person not white or able to speak English fluently. In 1955 an amendment to the city charter granted voting rights to citizens of all races for municipal elections beginning November 5th of each year. Pleasant Grove is a small town in Montgomery County, Alabama, United States. It was founded in 1819 by James and Sarah Pleasant. The first settlers were Methodist Episcopalians. By the 1830s, the population had grown to around 400 people. In 1865, Pleasant Grove became the county seat of Montgomery County. The town's history can be traced back to 1819 when James and Sarah Pleasant founded it on land they purchased from John Hicks in what is now known as neighboring Auburn Hills. After some initial troubles with the local Creek Indians who believed they were taking their lands, the Pletsons began to grow crops and build themselves a home which still stands today – a 1-story frame cabin with an attached garage that measures . The Cabin was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. The community continued to grow as cotton plantations were established throughout Montgomery County during the early 19th century. However, due to political unrest and Indian Removal efforts led by President Abraham Lincoln in 1862, many of these plantations closed down or were sold off to new owners - including Pleasant Grove's original white landowners who had bought into them earlier. In 1865, after becoming part of Montgomery County, Pleasant Grove saw its first post office opened under auspices of the newly formed courthouse committee chaired by Isaac Newton Harris (a nephew of Jefferson Davis). At this time there existed only one road linking all of Montgomery County: US Route 431 which ran through downtown Birmingham and terminated at US Route 24 near Gettysburg; no roads connected rural areas east of Hoover Dam until well into the 20th century. Consequently, business activity within town was sporadic at best; much like many other villages throughout Alabama during this time period. However, things started changing soon after when new steamboats began arriving at Mobile Bay for shipment upriver towards points such as Chattanooga or Jacksonville respectively - providing an impetus for development within townspeople leading up to what would become known as "The Cotton Boom". This particular boom period coincided with increased demand for cottonseed oil (due largely to technological advances), cotton textiles (mainly because railroads had been developed), and other agricultural products exported along Ulysses S Grant Boulevard which ran through downtown Birmingham from 1870-1887 inclusive - creating numerous businesses such as stores (such as J C McCloskey & Company) catering specifically thereto while also creating more job opportunities for locals during this timespan thanks primarily to advances in transportation technology which made it easier than ever before for goods and people alikeTo say that "Pleasant Grove went 'boom' isn't quite right...it actually took off slowly due partiallyto restrictions placed on farming methods by state government." This being so local farmers gained access not just to marketable commodities but also irrigation supplies essential for growing crops indoors instead of outdoors Additionally freed up acreage formerly used for livestock production allowed larger farms/g ranches/livestock pens etc.,to commence operations resulting in even more jobs being createdPEACHY GOODNESS!
