Pleasant Grove is a small community located in rural Jefferson County, Alabama, about 20 miles (32 km) east of Birmingham. It was founded in 1851 by Methodist missionaries as a missionary station on the north side of Mobile Bay. The first postmaster was W.C. Hopkins. The community grew rapidly and by 1865 it had a population of 300 people. In 1870, Pleasant Grove became part of the newly organized county ofJefferson and its name was changed to Pleasant Grove in honor of the original settlers. In 1892, Pleasant Grove residents voted to secede from Jefferson County and become an independent town. The town's first mayor was A.F Dixon and its first store manager was Hosea Griggs Jr.. In 1907, the town accepted annexation by Birmingham and its name changed again to Birmingham Hillsborough Township

The town was originally a small rural community with few residents. However, over time, the population of Pleasant Grove grew and soon there were enough people to support a school, a post office, and a grocery store. In 1925, Pleasant Grove became an incorporated municipality.
