The first post office was established in 1880. Coal mining ended in the early 1940s and most of the buildings were demolished to make way for residential development. The current community developed around Pleasant Valley Elementary School which opened in 1955 and has been used as a middle school since then. In 2006, the school system merged with two other schools to form Consolidated Mountain School District #6 which includes Pleasant Grove proper along with parts of neighboring towns such as Sheffield and Uniontown. The new district provides Scholastic504 education through ninth grade for residents of Pleasant Grove proper; also providing Woodlawn Middle School (grades 7-12) on Hubbard Road east of I-565 and Mount Carmel High School (grades 11-12) on Mountain View Road north of I-565 for students living beyond the City limits of Birmingham including those who attend high school within city limits but outside of districts operated by Birmingham Public Schools A new football stadium has been built adjacent to Legacy High School since 2007 which will eventually seat 6,000 people when it becomes fully operational. The stadium was funded by Citizens Equity Partners LLC who are also responsible for developing a master plan that will encompass all aspects surrounding the stadium including retail development on multiple levels across several blocks facing University Boulevard

The first store opened in 1880 and became one of the most popular businesses in town. By 1896, Pleasant Grove had a school and two churches serving its residents. In 1911, construction began on what would become known as Highway 441 which connected Auburn with Birmingham via Pleasant Grove. The highway would become one of the most important transportation routes in Birmingham during World War II because it allowed goods and people to be transported quickly and easily between these cities without having to go through Mobile or Montgomery
